Explosion under Johannesburg in 1896. Largest non-nuclear in the history

In the history of this road was one of the biggest disasters.

the <center>**Dynamite train**</center>

16 Feb 1896 at the station of Johannesburg came to train loaded with dynamite. The total number was 60 tons. It was intended to develop the mines.

The warehouses were full. Therefore, a train set for the siding. The weather was hot (in the southern hemisphere at this time of summer). 19 Feb the train approached shunting locomotive and began the hitch. Apparently, not calculating speed, the engine drove too fast and got a strong push. The explosion occurred.

After the explosion created a hole 8 meters deep. Long 60 meters and a width of 50 meters.

This funnel could fit a three — storey 4 entrances house.

The consequences were enormous. The nearest village was completely destroyed.

This tragedy killed 75 people. At the local cemetery there is a memorial plaque as a reminder of that day in the history of South Africa.
