# Mr Whippy - Still Going Strong

The first ice cream van with soft whip ice cream appeared around the streets of West Philadelphia, USA, on St. Patrick's Day in 1956.

In the UK, it was around the latter part of 1958 when a couple of the new Mister Softee ice cream vans appeared unofficially.

They were selling soft ice cream in the streets of London in advance of the official start of vending date which was early April 1959.

The first Mister Softee vans to start trading oficially in the UK, as a franchise operation, were doing so around South West London and the Kent borders.

They've always been known as ice cream vans in the UK rather than ice cream trucks as they are called in the United States.

Mr Whippy brings back many happy childhood memories of rushing out into the street to buy an ice cream or cider ice lolly when I heard the sound of Greensleeves or Teddy Bears' Picnic tinkling down the road.

But these days, primarily due to everyone having freezers in their homes, that happy sound is hardly ever heard around the streets of Britain.

In the halcyon Sixties, the vehicle’s heyday,  there were some 30,000 ice cream vans in Britain but nowadays there are a mere 5,000.

If you want to see one you will have to go to an event, such as Paddle Round The Pier in Brighton, where I took these 3 photographs. And which incidentally is happening again in a couple of weeks time.

I hope the weather picks up a bit by then. Look at the grass in these photos - parched. This year it's green as green can be. &#128513;

Hey, @gillianpearce.

We had a few ice cream trucks running around when we moved to town, but my parents weren't keen on paying for something that likely cost more than what it would in a store, so I don't remember ever getting ice cream from a truck. Subsequently, when the boys were growing up, I don't remember there being so many of the trucks, and if there was, we didn't get it for them, either. :)

Seems like food trucks have been on the rise in our area for the last few years. Maybe more, at festivals and fairs and things. I just mean you can find some on street corners or next to restaurants or some kind of attraction quite a bit of the time out of the year whereas before there wouldn't be any. Laws seem to be fairly lax for them.

Yeah. I never hear them in the streets nowadays. Another happy childhood memory my kids didn't have.

I used to like the cider ice lollies as they weren't available anywhere else at the time. You couldn't buy them in shops. &#128513;

They sound amazing, so they were probably sourced only to the trucks. I wonder where they went, though. Surely they'd rather stay in business even if the ice cream trucks didn't come around.

Haha, yeah... I love those old names. "Mr. Whippy" sounds very 1960's. Nice photos of them!

Do they play music there, too? Some of the cities created laws to prevent them from doing it here, and they've mostly disappeared. There's still an old-fashioned truck in St. Paul, though, that goes around with it's music playing.
