What Are These? Mushrooms? Another Kind Of Fungi?

**A property we strolled through last weekend had some unusual _things_ growing on trees that had fallen years ago. The trees looked rotted, had soft bark and had these _things_ growing on them.**

My first thought was _mushrooms_ of some sort and I used my cellphone app called _**Picture This**_ to see if I could find out what they were... _no luck_ with the app; it's mainly for plants, flowers and leaves' identification.

The genus has a few names and species, but  "Turkey Tail" covers them.   They fresher they are, the tastier  -and easier to chew.  Edible.  But they taste kinda woody as they age.    Personally, I prefer to harvest them at this stage for stir fry.   Otherwise I collect a pound or two and dry them out in the sun.  Once dry I grind em in a coffee grinder to make a powder for tea.   That tea is actually pretty good, second to Chaga.
