I have been on a bit of a negative kick lately but I only do this because I am being honest about how I feel about things.  I'm not going to pretend to like something just because it seems everyone else does.  I am quite certain that most people that look at this review will disagree with me but here is the truth:  I don't rate Raging Bull as highly as other people.

I feel as though many people just look at the fact that Martin Scorsese directed something and then immediately claim it is a stupendous work of art.  A work of art this film may be but I think it is boring.  The movies is based on a real person and that same real person's book by the same (sorta) name.

As I am sure most of you know, this film is about the rise and fall of Jake LaMotta (Robert De Niro,) an extremely gifted boxer who rose to fame in the 1940's and early 1950's.  While his talent is undeniable, he suffers from trust issues and rage - he is constantly lashing out at his friends and even his family, normally due to completely unwarranted jealousy, and this causes horrible problems for him.

One fantastic thing that did come out of this film was that Joe Pesci was relatively unknown before it, and if it were not for his casting in this film the world may have never known his brilliance.  Joe plays the role of Jake's brother Joey (easy for people on the set to remember that one) and he tries and tries to stick with Jake despite the fact that Jake constantly uses him as a punching bag (physically and mentally) until even he abandons him.   Of course Pesci and De Niro went on to make a bunch of films together later and many of those are on my all time favorite list.

Now that trailer is exceptional and doesn't add much credence to my statement of not liking the film.  I do admit that it is a work of art but I think the movie suffers from several extremely bad actors such as pretty much all of the mob bosses and quite frankly, the movie is boring.  It failed to make any sort of real impression at the box office and did so poorly that Scorsese was actually concerned that his career was over after making this film.   

However, it was later recognized and nominated for 8 Academy Awards and won 2 of them.  

I don't think this movie is terrible but if I was going to make a list of "movies everyone else loves that I consider "meh," Raging Bull would definitely be on that list.  That's my truth, and I'm sticking to it!
