The V Wars trailer looks like it could lead to a new and interesting take on the second most overused horror-ish genre of recent times:  Vampires.  Unfortunately, a good overall story is ruined by bad writing, some really awful acting, and what appears to be well-intentioned but poorly funded CGI.

The story begins with a scientist named Dr. Luther (played by Ian Somerhalder who you might remember as "Boone" from LOST) and his pal Michael Fayne (Adrian Holmes) who are sent to investigate a mysterious disappearance of another scientist in the Arctic.  Why it needed to be JUST these two guys instead of a rescue team is the first part of the series that made me roll my eyes.  

When they get there (because they know how to fly a helicopter on their own) they discover an abandoned camp with signs of a bloody struggle.  They realize too late that they have been exposed to a pathogen of sorts and are stuck in quarantine back in the States.

To make a long story short, they are released when the scientists can't find anything wrong with them.  However, a bit later Michael is experiencing changes to his body and Dr. Luther is not.  These changes eventually change Michael into a blood-sucking vampire who has difficulty controlling his urges to drink while Luther is unaffected.

Turns out that a person needs to have a specific gene to be affected by the pathogen, which spreads by almost any human contact.  The reason why people were exposed to it was because it was buried under ice that global warming ended up exposing.  It seems impossible for Netflix to not make really anything without interjecting some level of politics into it.  

If these appear like these are tremendous spoilers take it easy:  Most of what i just said is in the trailer and if not, it is spelled out in the first half of the first episode.

I find it exceptionally frustrating that in the show society is familiar with vampire lore. But when faced with bodies piling up that are all missing half of their blood and have neck penetration wounds, the detectives just can't quite figure it out!  What could it possibly be?

I suppose if i were to say anything good about this not scary and excessively drawn-out story filled with campy acting is that the notion of vampires still having human characteristics such as empathy and desire to not kill is an interesting one although not entirely original (True Blood anyone?) However, I couldn't endure more than 3 episodes of it and when that happens, it's not a very good series.  

It currently enjoys a decent rating on IMDB and what not, and some critics are kissing Netflix's ass on this one, so therefore I suppose you don't need to listen to me entirely.  I guess Netflix ran out of superheros and figured "well we can't do another zombie something or other.... how about vampires!"   And the board room went wild.

If you are really into vampires I would say give it a go, but I was bored and mostly just irritated at the dumb situations, idiotic detectives, and just bad dialogue.  I would encourage you to watch one episode and come back and tell me whether or not I am right about this one.
