##   Russian Circles  - *Geneva*

## Russian Circles are a band
I discovered five or so years ago, and immediately became hooked.  They're an instrumental metal/post-rock band from Chicago, IL, formed by Mike Sullivan and Dave Turncrantz.  After losing their original bassist, Brian Cook (formerly of **These Arms are Snakes** and **Botch**) joined the group, with this line-up continuing through today.  Though the group is clearly influenced by metal bands, they incorporate a lot of other elements, like the reverb laden, heavily layered guitar loops of post-rock, and incredibly rhythmic drums of more technical jazz/math-rock bands.

## This is the title track
of the band's third album, released in 2009, and is a great starting point to get into the band.  It's based a relatively simple, heavy chugging guitar riff, on top of which is layered lighter melody lines, though the rhythm section is where things really shine.  The drums avoid any typical metal cliches, opting instead for more intricate patterns, and the intense poly-rhythmic bassline that makes up the middle of the track is a perfect example of their willingness to experiment with outside the box ideas.  I highly reccomend the album as a whole (and their whole discography more generally) if you dig this tune.
