Will a wind turbine provide the power you need? Not really

A while back I did a post on how well a solar system does to provide the power we need so I thought it worth mentioning that we also have a wind turbine to assist with our power needs and charging the batteries.

To state the obvious, wind is essential. Without wind the wind turbine is useless. We live on a 2300 foot mountain so from late fall to mid spring we have a good amount of wind. Personally I don’t like wind, especially the cold north wind, but knowing it produces power eases my pain.

We have Primus air 40 from Primus Wind Power. It has a 46 inch rotor diameter and will produce power starting at 7 mph. It is rated at 160 watts with a 12.5 mph wind.

On a sunny day the wind turbine serves no purpose, which is okay since in the summer we get lots of sun and no wind. On a cloudy and windy day it is helpful, but we still need to conserve our power. Without power from the solar panels the wind turbine can barely keep up with demand.

If the batteries are at 24.8 volts, for example, and our freezer is running the wind turbine will usually maintain the battery power at 24.8, but no additional volts are added to the batteries. If there is no wind, then it is time to start the generator to maintain the charge on the solar batteries.

After using the wind turbine all winter, my assessment is that it has been helpful and reduced the run time of our generator, but perhaps my expectations were too high in regards to the amount of power it would produce. At best it is like putting a trickle charge on the battery without any real charging ability.

Does this mean that you would have to have either one large one or multiple little ones to make any difference in how much power you get? I am also guessing that they can be expensive for the amount of power you get!

You need at lest three turbines. They are expensive considering the amount of power that they produce.  Solar panels work much better and provide more consistent power.

We are planning off grid and likely will need to use both systems. In the dry season we have plenty of sun but in the rainy season, we would need the wind power. You'd think with all our knowledge and advanced technology we would find better solutions.

One wind turbine is never enough to do anything but just trickle charge like you said. Is the cost really worth getting multiple turbines to do what you need to do?

No.  The cost would not be worth it.  You could send more on turbines then the solar panels.

We looked into getting a turbine as we have a constant wind here. But we are a long narrow (only 160' wide) strip and for the necessary height, if a guy wire let go, it would land on neighbors' property, and thereby was a hazard. So that took care of that pretty quickly. 

Good to read about how your's worked for you though.

I investigated wind power several years ago and determined there is no ROI unless you have extreme winds or are able to mount the turbine at an extreme elevation. 
Now Hydro power is a different story. If you are fortunate enough to have access to a decent flow of water you can't go wrong with a small scale hydro-generator.

So at 24 volt, the 40 amp windg enerator charges about an amp or less? The biggest plus is that it charges 24 hours a day with wind. It looks like you have a 250 watt solar panel working with the wind generator to achieve about 300 Watts. Nice charge rate.
