* We can not say that we love God without having a feeling of love towards our brothers and sisters.

The Gospel of John was the last that was written, and his epistles were the last ones that were written in the New Testament. Matthew, Mark and Luke were written before the Gospel of John, and they talk about the events and teachings of the Lord Jesus, while John presents the highest and most spiritual aspects regarding the coming of the Son of God to the earth, and it clearly shows us what kind of people can receive eternal life. He tells us repeatedly that those who believe have eternal life. The Gospel of John is full of the theme of faith. When a person believes, he receives eternal life (eg, 5:24, 20:31). This is the theme of the Gospel of John.

When we come to the epistles of Paul, of Peter and the other apostles, we see that they explain what faith is; pay attention to man's faith in God; they say that those who believe are justified, forgiven and cleansed. While in the epistles written by John, we see that the emphasis is different, for they emphasize the behavior of man before God; They speak of love, affirming that this must be the evidence of a person's faith.

If we ask someone, "How do you know that you have eternal life?", Your answer may be: "The Word of God says so." However, that is not enough, since such a claim could be made based on intellectual knowledge, without necessarily having believed in the Word of God. For this reason, John shows us in his epistles that if a man has eternal life, he must prove it. If one claims to be of God, others must witness some manifestation or testimony.

A person could rely on his knowledge to say: "I believed; so I have eternal life ». This would make the process of believing and having eternal life, a simple recipe: first, the gospel is heard; second, it is understood; third, it is believed; and fourth, it is known that you have eternal life. But we can not trust this general formula of "salvation." The Bible tells us that in the days of Paul there were false brothers (2 Cor 11:26, Gal 2: 4), that is, those who call themselves brothers, and they are not. Some claim that they are from God, but in reality they lack life; they enter the church because of the understanding they have of certain doctrines, because of their knowledge and by observing certain precepts.

How do we know if before God the faith of a person is alive or is not more than a formula? How can we prove who is from God and who is not? The epistles of John solve this problem. John shows us the way to differentiate between true brothers and false ones, between those who were born of God and those who were not. Let's see how John discerns this.

* A life of love

There are two passages in the Bible that contain the phrase "from death to life" (John 5:24 and 1 John 3:14). Let's compare them. In the first, we see that one passes from death to life when one believes. The second presents the evidence of one who has passed from death to life: love for brothers.

Suppose you have many friends and you love them very much, or admire many people. However, there is still a difference, although I can not explain it, between their feelings towards them and their feelings towards their brothers and sisters. If your parents father another child, a special and inexplicable feeling arises spontaneously towards you. It is a feeling of instinctive love, which shows that you belong to the same family.

The same happens with our spiritual family. Suppose we meet someone whose appearance, family history, education, personality and interests are totally different from ours; However, since that person believed in the Lord Jesus, spontaneously we feel an inexplicable affection towards her; We feel he is our brother, and we appreciate him more than our carnal family. This proves that we have passed from death to life.

In 1st Jn. 5: 1 we read some very important words. If we love God, who begot us, it is normal that we love the others that He begets. We can not say that we love God without having a feeling of love towards our brothers and sisters.

This love proves that the faith we have acquired is genuine. This inexplicable love can only be the result of a genuine faith and it is a very special love. We love a certain person for the simple fact that he is our brother, not because there is a common bond or because we have the same interests. Two people of different educational levels, with different opinions and points of view, can love each other simply because they are both believers. Among them there is an inexplicable feeling and affinity. This mutual affection is the evidence that they passed from death to life.

It is true that faith leads us to God, but it also leads us to our brothers and sisters. Once we receive this life, fraternal love springs up in us for many people, scattered all over the world, who have this same life. This life is pleased with the presence of them and delights in communicating with them, because it has a spontaneous love.

The Gospel of John and his epistles show us the order that God set. First, by faith we pass from death to life, and then, those who have passed from death to life have this love. We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers. This is a very reliable way to determine how many children of God there are on earth. Only those who love one another are brothers.

We must realize that in the eyes of God, our love for brothers demonstrates the genuineness of our faith. It is the best method to determine if a person's faith is true or false. The more the gospel is presented in great detail, the more easily false siblings infiltrate it. There must be a way to discern and recognize genuine faith. The epistles of John show us clearly that the way to differentiate true from false faith is not faith itself, but love. We do not need to ask how great a person's faith is, but how great is his love. Where there is genuine faith, there is love.

* The command to love

In 1 John 3:11, God commands us to love one another. And in verse 23 he commands two things: that we believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and that we love one another. Since we already believed, we must also love. God gave us this love and then gave us the commandment to love one another, that is, to use the love that God placed in us. We must apply it according to its nature and we must never extinguish it or injure it.

1 John 4: 7-8 says that we should love one another, because love is from God. Everyone who loves, has been born of God, but those who do not love, have not known God, because God is love. We did not have love, but now we have love, a love that comes from God. God pours out his love on everyone he begets.

Those who were born of God have received the life of God Himself. Since God is love, those He begets receive this love. The life we receive from God is full of love. The strange thing would be that we did not love each other. God places a life of love in the Christian and, on the basis of that life, gives the commandment: "Love one another". God first places his love in us, and then tells us to love. First it gives us a life of love, and then the command to love. We should bow our head and say: "Thanks we give to God, because his children love each other".

* He who does not love brothers

1st Jn. 2: 9-11 says that the love a man has for his brothers determines if he is a Christian and if he has turned away from the darkness.

If someone hates you, knowing that you are a Christian, this proves that the person is not a Christian. If he loves five of four brothers and hates one of them in his heart, this proves that this person is not a brother. We must realize that we do not love a brother because he is nice, but only and exclusively because he is a brother. In this passage we read: "He who hates his brother is in darkness, and walks in darkness." That is, the Bible eliminates the possibility that a person could hate his brother. If you hate someone you know is a brother, you should say, "Lord, I am not walking in the light, I am in darkness and I am walking in darkness."

In 1st Jn. 3:10 says that he who does not practice righteousness outwardly is not of God. In the same way, he who does not have love in his bowels towards his brother is not of God. In this the children of God are manifested.

The v. 14 says: "He who does not love remains in death." This love does not refer to ordinary love, but to the love with which one loves one's brothers. The Bible says that if a person does not have this love for the brothers "he remains in death." It would be very strange that even after believing he still does not feel affection or feel attracted to other believers. In such a case, your faith may not be genuine. Before the person was dead, and I'm afraid he is still in that condition, because faith is based on love.

Verse 15. We can not conceive that anyone can kill after believing in the Lord. The Bible tells us that to hate a brother is tantamount to committing murder. A person who has eternal life could never hate his brother. The children of God can be in different conditions, but they can never hate. If a brother has committed a sin worthy of excommunication, we can confront the matter with indignation; if he has done something extremely wrong, we can reprimand him severely before the Lord; but we can never hate him. If a brother hates another brother, eternal life is not in him.

All the brothers have a life rich enough to love all the brothers and sisters. Our love for a brother must be the same we feel for everyone else. To discover that a person does not have brotherly love, it is not necessary that she hate all the brothers; there is enough evidence to abhor one.

If a person does not love the brother, but hates or threatens or attacks him, the only thing we can say is: "God have mercy on him, because he is a person who thinks he is a believer, but in reality he is not saved" . If you hate a brother, this proves that you are not of the Lord.

Under normal conditions, if a brother has done things that irritate you, he can exhort and rebuke him, but he can not hate him in his heart. Even if you say it to the church, according to Matthew 18, your intention must be to restore it. If you do not intend to restore it and if your goal is to attack and denigrate it, this proves that you are below the sibling level.

When the young messenger brought to David the news of the death of Saul, a king who hated him, David tore his clothes, wailed, wept and fasted until the night (2 Samuel 1: 11-12). When someone told David that Absalom, his rebellious son, had died, David was even more moved (2 Sam 18:33). David had to fight the battles, he had to judge and he had to condemn, but he could not contain the tears when he knew that Saul and Absalom had died.

If a person can only judge and condemn, but has neither tears nor sadness, this shows that he knows nothing of brotherly love. If someone rebukes a brother for the sole purpose of offended, such a person does not have love, but resentment. To abhor brothers is to kill them! This is a very serious matter!

(1 John 4: 20-21). John shows us that loving brothers is like loving God. He who does not love his brother, whom he sees, can not love God, whom he does not see. We should love our brothers if we profess to love God.

We must be careful not to do anything that offends love. We should not offend the brothers in the least. We must not put aside brotherly affection. God put this love in us so that we can use it by serving and helping the brothers. We must allow this brotherly love to grow and strengthen.

(1 John 3:17) The love of God does not dwell in a person who closes his guts to his brothers. One can deceive oneself by saying: "I do not love this brother, but I love God." Our relationship with the brothers is the result of our relationship with God. If we reject our brothers, the love of God is not in us.

* How to love brothers

(1 John 3:16) What does it mean to love the brothers? Juan explains it. We do not know what love is until we see that the Lord laid down his life for us. To love the brothers is to be willing to deny ourselves to serve and perfect others, and is willing to even give our own lives for the brothers.

Verse 18 says that love is not composed of empty words; it is the manifestation in deeds and in truth. 1st Jn. 4: 10-12 shows us that our love for God and our love for others can not be separated. God has put many brothers today before us to put into practice the love we have for God. It is vanity to limit ourselves to talking about love. Our love for God must be expressed in our love for our brothers and sisters.

(1 John 5: 2-3). If we love God, we must keep his commandments. For example, God's commandments say that we should be baptized by immersion, but many children of God have different views about it. They say: «If you love me, you should not baptize by immersion, because this will hurt me». This puts us in a dilemma. We can not say that we love the children of God if we do not keep the commandments of God. If we are afraid to obey the commandments of God for fear of other brothers being offended, we will not advance them or them. Keeping all the commandments of God is the only way to direct the children of God on the path of obedience.

Let's suppose that a person's parents do not allow him to believe in the Lord. What should that person do? Denying the Lord out of love for his parents? If he pleases them and denies the Lord, he is not practicing love at all; if he does not please them and believes in the Lord, they will be angry for a while, but that person has opened the way for them to believe in the Lord. This is love! However, we should not offend our parents or our attitude or our words. We must grasp the truth of God, but at the same time we need to maintain love. We must learn to be fair; However, we should not set aside love. Do not emphasize the sanctity of God's life at the expense of the love that is found in His life. These two aspects must be kept in balance.

We want to obey God, but we must do it with humility. Do not offend love. If you must do something, do it, but never do anything that offends love. We must maintain a friendly attitude. Even when there are different opinions among the brothers, we must remain kind. We should be full of love when we say to our brother: "Brother, I would like to see what you have seen, but God has shown me differently, and I can not do anything but obey him." Do not lower the standard of the word of God or offend love. We must show our brother that we are not doing something for personal interest, but because God has said it. We must maintain the proper attitude, and we must be full of humility. This will win the favor of many brothers and sisters.

* The result of loving
In 1 John 4:16 the prayer God is love is mentioned a second time. Because God is love, He wants us to love our brothers and remain in love. As long as we remain in love, we will remain in God.

(1 John 4: 17-18) Only in 1 John 4 does it tell us how to stand confidently before the divine tribunal. The key is to stay in love. We will have confidence in the day of judgment when this love has been perfected in us. We must have a single attitude towards our brothers and sisters, an attitude of love. We must earn them and seek the greatest benefit for them. We should not have any grudges, only love. Practicing this is a real exercise. One day our whole being will remain in love, and love will remain in us. Then our lives on earth will be free from all fear. And when we stand before the tribunal of God, we will not be afraid of anything.

We already saw that loving brothers is like loving God. Our love for the brothers will make the love of God perfect in us. We should love the brothers to the point that there is no fear in us towards them. Loving God and loving brothers are two inseparable things.

May we all learn to love our brothers from the very beginning of our Christian life, and may God's life find a channel through which to flow in us.
