The mistake evangelists are making

Yesterday, I came across a few lines a brother and a friend of mine wrote on our Christian forum concerning the work of the evangelists nowadays. Evangelists carry a great responsibility to carry the gospel to the masses out there. Their work is very vital to the kingdom. The importance of what they do cannot be over emphasized.

The way the gospel is presented by most evangelists nowadays seems to be rather a **condemning gospel than the good news gospel it is meant to be**. Evangelists now present a gospel where the sinner is given two options which is to receive Christ and be saved from hell. The gospel has become that of fear where the sinner is frightened to come to Jesus Christ in an attempt to escape hell.

The big question is: Does God want us to come to him just because we want to escape hell?
Our God loves us and he wants us to see how much he loves us and that should make us love him to. We should not come to him because we are so afraid to go to hell but rather, we should come to him out of love for him. It is that simple; the sinner should come to Christ out of love and not because of the fear of going to hell. If the gospel you preach is that of hell and condemnation, then the gospel is not that of the good news stated in John 3:16.

The evangelist should carry a gospel message of good tidings, love, salvation and saving grace.
As evangelists, we should lay more emphasis on Christ coming to save the people from their sins. This can be seen clearly demonstrated in the story of the woman caught in adultery. The people who wanted to stone her clinged to the law which was a kind of gospel that focused more on the punishment she will get for her crime. Just like today where evangelists are more focused on telling the people that they will go to hell because of their sinful lifestyle. But see what Jesus does, he lays more attention on saving her from the life of sin without condemning her. He shows her unmerited love thereby demonstrating grace and that is what saves the lady and not the fear of being killed for her crime.

Love is greater than fear and when one comes to Christ out of love he will stand strong. Those who come to Christ out of fear of going to hell will never be confident that they are saved. You will find them always in doubt and feeling that they need to do more than just believe that Christ has saved them. They will lack faith and will always be in doubt and fearful. But we know that this is not the spirit that the gospel instills in us. The gospel instills in us a bold spirit for we become free from fear when we become children of God.

It is rather sad when you ask someone why he/she is a Christian and all they can say is because they don't want to go to hell. I mean, how bad is that when the greatest command of all is love the Lord your God with all your heart, body and soul. And you are coming to him not because you love him but just because you want to escape hell. I don't blame the people who have this kind of mentality, it is more of the gospel that was preached to them when they gave their lives to Christ.

Evangelists, there is work to be done in the way we present the gospel message to the masses. Remember, it is a good news message and not one of condemnation. God bless you all.

Evangelicals aren't a group with one mind. There are many ways to present the gospel. I think almost anyone would agree that you can't scare anyone into heaven.

Thanks for clearly stating your point of view on this. You are entitled to it for sure. There are many ways of presenting the gospel and while some ways really do present it so well, others don't. Atleast this is what I think based on my experiences at one point. 😃
