How to Stay Sane as a Freelancer - It’s Important to Add Gigs Slowly
Freelance life is feast-and-famine. Sometimes the work is plentiful and fun and the money is pouring in… other times all you have are shitty jobs and the pay is bad.

https://i.imgur.com/hDVKXBo.jpg

When I am in “famine” mode with my work, I always want to add **all of the gigs**. If I am not earning enough money, or if I am bored with my gigs, it makes sense for me to seek out new work. In these moments, it often feels that I need several new clients to turn things around.

What Happens When You Add a Client

Then, I get one new client.

“This is a great start,” I think to myself. “Only another one or two new clients and I’ll be able to settle in and get comfortable with the work.”

Of course, to find new work, I need to keep applying to new gigs. Here’s where I have learned a valuable lesson - **Any new gig will eat up the time I’d otherwise spend finding more work.**

In the first month after accepting a new client, *even if it’s only a little bit of work*, I won’t have the mental space to accept other clients. It takes time and energy to learn what a new employer wants from me - what style of work, how fast do I need to respond? Is this a “talk once per day” kind of gig, or a “check in at the end of the month” one?

As a writer, it could be one article per week. As a musician, perhaps it’s a new band with the first gig scheduled for two months from now. Whatever the case may be, it feels like there’s room to keep looking - but somehow, there is no time to actually look.

Channel That Energy Into Great Work

At this point in the freelance experience, I get nervous. *Gotta be great, gotta achieve the best work… shouldn’t I find more clients?* The idea that I’m blowing it, moving too slow, starts to agitate me.

This is where I need to stop myself - and you may benefit from a similar practice. Rather than beating myself up over needing *even more progress*, i.e. finding another client… it’s better to channel that focus into the gig I already have. What if I just crush this gig and deliver A+ work for that first month?

After some time goes by, it’ll be easier to see what my schedule is panning out to be. Does this gig take up a lot of time? Are they asking me to do a higher volume of work now that they’ve seen I can deliver good content? Those are important questions to answer before I keep searching for new gigs.

There Are Always More Gigs

As long as you can pay your rent, don’t panic. I am learning that the slow-and-steady approach often leads to the best freelance life and the least stress.

But at first, in that feast-or-famine mindset, it is easy to feel like we need to get ALL THE GIGS. I still feel that way at times even though I know it isn’t true. Next time you get a bit desperate, I recommend slowing down. Look for **one** great gig and crush it. IMO, this is probably the best way to build up a roster of great clients.

What do you think?

Uh!! I was freelancing a long time ago, but I remember that in my case it was 10 gigs at the time or nothing.
I have no idea how that was even possible, but at that moment it was very hard to keep it up and deliver an excellent results.

You must have a strong work ethic to keep up with 10 gigs at once! I can barely handle 4 at a time.

It seems freelancing is the same all over the world... When I had some hard times without gigs, I always thought it was because freelancing isn't really a thing in Croatia yet but now it seems it's the same everywhere.

I also write for Textbroker, Constant Content, and Bitcoin Canada right now. Right now with Steem and SBD prices so high I am earning the majority of my income from steem though, it's not even close right now. I mean... damn!

All writing stuff for now. Textbroker & Constant Content are two content mills I write for that are open for anybody to apply to, and I also do some articles for the blog [Bitcoin Canada](bitcoincanada.org).

I want to get more musical sources of income happening - but I am willing to be patient there, I'd rather focus on original music. Steemit helps a lot because I can earn some money blogging about my music stuff.

Yes, clients can eat up so much time and energy. It's easy to waste emotion on communication vs. putting it into the music. I've spent so much time dealing with how I am going to reply to a client asking for the most absurd time sucking things that were outside of our agreement (which happens all the time) that I decided to just let that part of the gig go. I just had to communicate to the client how they can finish the project (this was past the ending) with a different mixer and I sent them the actual session files.

Thanks for the post, you've been upvoted!

Indeed. Sometimes it feels like so much energy goes into the logistics and non-musical work, that there is barely any left for the music itself. I'm trying to get better about prioritizing the pure music work

I think that is some solid advice matt. Quality of quantity. Slow and steady to get ahead in a less stressful way. Great post my fellow sndbox friend! Hope your holidays are going well. -Dan

This is especially true for street performance. It’s so easy to scramble and think any sunny day or crowded street is a missed opportunity. But that kind of scrambling mindset translates to a kind of beggar’s mentality where things are scarce and we have to push it to succeed. And that feeling is such a turn off to be potential audience who might support our work if it only had a more calm and natural vibe.

Yup I was once a street musician with my friend Jake, we did 20+ hours per week of "busking" each week but sadly like you said, because we were too focused on **quantity** of hours, we did not earn a good amount of money *per* hour and had to give up.

In retrospect more focus on quality (in this case - selling more CDs and merch, better social media presence, more actual gigs) would have been better than cramming in so many hours in those freezing cold Boston subway stations playing Toto's Africa over and over lol

*I bless the rains down in Aaaaaaafrica*

Exactly. I see musicians sometimes looking so sad and hungry for cash sitting there 8 hours a day, when all that energy packed into a few good short sets could bring much more appreciation and energy.

Speaking my language, brother. Running a recording studio, touring with three projects...and now making time to cultivate synth videos for steemit? My calendar is just a sea of black dots. I am also horrible at saying no to work....infact the only reason I’ve gotten to -work- on content for here is because of a cancellation in the studio!

Sometimes for sure, but it beats the stress of being underbooked. I’m not complaining, and I’m grateful for the hustle. Most obvious and frequent problem I run into is the classic one-extra-round-of-mix-notes / need more time to finish mixing a record and leaving for tour the next day conundrum, but I’m generally booking three months out and trying to leave a day or two off before each trip. I’m also mixing predominantly outboard so recalls after a month of tour are not billable hours. Time managent ftw.
