Will Robots Create All of Our Entertainment in the Future?
When The Long Tail was published, it changed the way that people look at markets. We now know that for every mega-successful brand, there are tens of thousands of niche products appealing to small groups.

For every Radiohead, there’s a [Yowie](https://yowie.bandcamp.com/) or a [Shaggs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shaggs).

For every Steven Colbert, there’s an [Eric Andre](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVhme1eb8SI) - and for every Eric, there’s a Let’s Paint!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvbL_5rH1QQ

The same applies to other fields - McDonald’s vs. [Cook Out](http://www.cookout.com/), Overwatch/Hearthstone Streamers vs. [Mario 64 Streamers](https://www.twitch.tv/blinny), you get the idea.

<h3>More Niches Over Time</h3>

It feels like we used to have way *less* niches. I know music best, and with that industry, the whole idea of independent “DIY” bands wasn’t a thing until the 1970s when Sonic Youth and the DC punk scene emerged, trailblazing independent touring paths across the country.

<center>https://i.imgur.com/GPSjMsk.jpg
[This book](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Band_Could_Be_Your_Life) is the definitive document of those early DIY days</center>

Nowadays, we’ve gone from a few important indie labels like Sub Pop and Dischord to an entire world of indie artists uploading their own records to Bandcamp and Soundcloud.

Here’s all of the distribution options - the same ones the major labels use - that any musician can access for a few bucks via a digital distributor:

<center>https://i.imgur.com/ASvdmqi.png
source: [CDBaby](https://members.cdbaby.com/digital-distribution.aspx)</center>

The same seems true with TV, right? We went from three major channels to cable to the world of YouTube. Each time, the niches are able to sustain themselves on smaller and smaller groups of people, leading to even more niches.

Now when you want to watch sports, you don’t just watch the sports network - you watch your favorite sports YouTuber who happens to also like tattoos and heavy metal, just like you. Your niche is there for the enjoying.

Will we keep going down this path? What is the next step?

<h3>Artificial Intelligence Powered Individualized Niches</h3>

Here’s a weird/scary example: AI-powered niches.

Now you don’t need a real group of people to agree with you about a common interest. You can have the computer generate it for you, artificially.

If I want to hear 20 years of evolution in the non-existent genre of Polka Death Metal, I can ask the computer to “synthesize two decades of content and culture around the hypothetical genre of PolkaDeath” - then, two seconds later, a fictionalized “DeathPolka” wiki is in front of me.

<center>https://i.imgur.com/AtrW9fl.jpg</center>

Furthermore, with futuristic technology, the computer can actually synthesize the music itself, creating a logical progression of Death Polka music over the course of 20 years. The early stuff is raw and poorly recorded, and by the end it is all intricate and conceptual, executed with skill.

If computers can do this in other areas - like generating a new 9 season sitcom to fill your craving for “more cartoons like Bojack Horseman” and so on - we could potentially each live in our own world of media, enjoying content created to exactly match our tastes.

<h3>The Only Problem</h3>

Have you ever loved a song that nobody else knew about? Something super obscure?

As time goes on, does your love for that song feel as strong as the love for a more popular group? For me, when I can’t discuss a work of art with anybody else, it is less magical after a while. Part of the fun isn’t just experiencing the work - it’s sharing that experience.

<center>https://i.imgur.com/Pv2c1Sx.jpg
Community makes music matter. Source: my old band</center>

By having our own unique content designed by computers, we would lose the communal experience of art. I suspect this would be unsatisfying.

In the end, as long as there is a distinguishable difference between human and machine consciousness, I suspect that people will want man-made art. Art and the idea of “meaningfulness” are tied together - while computers still feel cold and artificial.

Even if your computer can auto-generate pleasant sounds (or harsh metal, or fat beats, etc etc) - if it’s not *human*, and if it lacks the narrative of a real human artist, it may not catch on.

Who knows though. It seems like humankind is always able to adapt faster and more radically to a new technology than we’d expect. I mean, we are [trying to colonize mars](https://waitbutwhy.com/2015/08/how-and-why-spacex-will-colonize-mars.html) right now.

One thing seems clear to me: We are entering a world of increasingly empowered, and often smaller, niches. Here’s hoping that this trend develops in a positive way (more independence and agency for a variety of artists), and not in a negative computers-replace-all-humans kind of way.

What do you think? Do you see the trend of niche-ification continuing, or have we reached peak fragmentation? Why?

I imagine, in many ways, even the concept of 'being human' will have new meaning in the future. Once machined computerized aspects of our life begin, computer made 3d printed heart transplant? Contacts that are mini computers that allow our field of vision to be dubbed over with computer information, digital implants? What is human and what is made by human and what is PURE human might become very blurred indeed. Interesting to think about. Also, death metal polka seems very intriguing indeed. :)

I love your idea of the contacts, that is a much better solution than [putting computer chips into our brains](https://waitbutwhy.com/2017/04/neuralink.html) like some people want to do. Or 3d printed organs! Hopefully these technologies will reach such amazing results!

Nice post. Nobody actually knows what might happpen next, but it has surely not reached its peak of fragmentation because basically, human beings tends to rely more on machines or technology in these modern age than mere using of hands.

Very interesting. I also wonder; if we evolve in this way where we all consume content and music custom tailored to meet our specific tastes, may we also end up evolving towards only interacting with A.I. created "online friends" that are custom tailored to be exactly what the A.I thinks we want in a friend? And then our "real life" friends may end up seeming to be uninteresting or too argumentative compared to our A.I. generated friends. I hope that this doesn't happen, but I could definitely see quite a few people falling into this way of thinking.

First big ups for the Let's Paint reference, In music specifically I think although "passive listening" benefits from alogirhythm's and AI, Spotify "Discover" playlists for example, I think true music lovers and curious thinkers will always look to human curated sources for discovery guidance. No matter how "smart" machine learning etc. get I don't think it will ever have the "taste" level to satisfy those interested in more far out & challenging music. With that said you can most definitely guarantee that tech companies (Spotify), major labels (Warner), & publishers are going to use AI to feed passive listeners with the kind of wall paper malaise that either A. keep the app turned on or B. sell you something based on whatever data points they're working with. I guess in summary that's the crux, this tech can only be as good as the data points & it's my worldview that some folks defy data points (at least sometimes!) and crave an IRL relationship weather through media, live shows whatever with artists they love.

It will only continue and it should. While I don't agree with having the attitude often characterized as "special snowflake-ism", we are all different.
There are of course commonalities, this is where the sharing comes in.

This is how personal growth takes place. Pursuing our separate passions and sharing what we enjoy with those who we find commonality.

If you haven't read [Diaspora](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaspora_(novel)) by [Greg Egan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Egan) I highly recommend it as well as his other books.

I think this is where the world is going. We will one day be uploaded to the cloud and live in cities managed by AI. Some of us will spend our time in seemingly endless custom entertainment. Some of us will be scientists. Some will be Rock Stars. Even in the polis we will all be individuals.

I can't wait.

Thanks for the post.

Keep Steeming!

@aschatria ·
Personally I believe that the computers, bits, robots... whatever... can automatize things and do them faster, but those things are just things, they can't substitute the bare essence.
The entertainment is a human-related term, the bots can barely power the websites and such, but I am more interested in the human being behind it all.
