A teacher is like a boat captain who steers and directs his ship, navigating it with purpose. In an educational context, a teacher’s students can be viewed as being his boat. The teacher’s role is to then guide his or her students with purpose and steer them towards achieving their educational goals.

Managing a class of students however surpasses simply just transferring knowledge. There is a lot more to it.  For instance, in our region, classrooms usually hold around 20 students each. This creates a noisy and restless atmosphere if not handled correctly. So, before a teacher can even steer his “ship”, he needs to prepare his boat and make sure that everything is functioning smoothly. The ability to manage a classroom becomes the teacher's priority in bringing the class into an encouraging and orderly learning climate. 

With this in mind, educators should incorporate learning models and practice roles of leadership that best suit their students, so as to prepare the correct learning environment and guide them to learn in a fitting and ultimate manner.

There are various models and styles of leadership that teachers need to know. But Merideth (2000) describes the ideal Teacher Leadership Model being rendered as REACH, an acronym for:

• ***Risk-Taking.***

Teachers are required to create and discover a learning climate that pleases students, sometimes this means doing things out of the norm, or trying new things, all in an effort to discover what sparks interest within the students.

• ***Effectiveness.***

Educators must strive to be effective. This requires them to truly care about the growth and development of her own profession, as well as the growth and development of her students.

• ***Autonomy.***

Teachers need to take the initiative to develop a good learning culture for their students. They need to be able to have a positive impact on students and at the same time, create an aura that encourages independent learning. 

• ***Collegiality.***

Teachers are required to build communities that have good communication channels. They need to establish good relationships with parents, colleagues, community leaders and other stakeholders – including their students!

• ***Honor.***

A professional teacher must maintain professional ethics, demonstrate integrity, honesty, and enhance the personal potential of the student's exemplary efforts. (https://eric.ed.gov/?id=ED454173)

### Teaching by way of leadership learning models also includes 4 important characteristics, as initiated by Bass. They are:

### 1. Idealized influence.

When a teacher is a role model, they need to be trustworthy, respected and able to make the best decisions for the benefit of improving the quality of learning.

### 2. Inspirational motivation:

It is important for teachers to have the ability can motivate all students and colleagues to have a positive commitment to the vision of the organization (school) and to help create a team spirit in achieving educational goals.

### 3. Intellectual Stimulation:

Teachers need to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skill so as to make learning more fun and creative for the students, to keep them interested and focused.

### 4. Individual consideration:

Teachers need to act as trainers and counselors, and provide constructive feedback to students and colleagues, keeping in mind that everyone is unique. (https://akhmadsudrajat.wordpress.com)

### From various studies, education activists conclude that teaching through leadership has been shown to have an effect on innovation and creativity, if all of the above points and discussions are practiced accordingly.
