Is AirAsia ASEAN Pass Worth Getting to Travel Southeast Asia on the Cheap?

So in planning my Southeast Asia trip in May, I wanted to bring the attention of one of the most popular airline choices in the Southeast Asia region: AirAsia.

Just quick overview, AirAsia is a Malaysian airline company based out of Kuala Lumpur. Since its founding, the AirAsia brand has expanded to other countries, where the spin-offs simply add the local country name to the airline name, such as Thai AirAsia, Indonesia AirAsia, etc.

They now even have long range flights that they brand AirAsia X ... which just included its newest location flying from Kuala Lumpur to Osaka to Honolulu, Hawaii.

One of the interesting airline passes they sell is the ASEAN pass. This is used for travel on ASEAN countries, including Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and much more.

But is getting the ASEAN pass with Air Asia worth it?

As you can see, there are two types of ASEAN pass. One for 30-day duration and the other for 60-day duration.

Buying the 60-day duration only saves you a small measily $30 instead of buying the 30-day duration twice at $160. So if you will be in Southeast Asia for just around 30 days, then the first pass makes sense, while the second pass makes sense if you know you'll be in Southeast Asia for a consecutive 60-days. But let's say you are in Southeast Asia 1 month and then there in another month, then buying two 30-day passes maybe better.

You can choose your local currency to see what the total cost is for the pass.

Something to note, the passes do NOT include local and airport taxes ... those will get added on later to your ticket. So in actuality, your total pass cost could be an extra $50 to $75 for total taxes to be added on top of the $160 30-day pass. That could bring your total to $210+ for the pass. That is still cheap considering travel around Southeast Asia flights can be 2-5 hours for cheap flights, unlike the United States domestic routes that are quite expensive.

How do you look for eligible destinations?

AirAsia has compiled an easy location finder tool to help you spot the locations that they service and then along with the number of credits you'd need to be able to redeem on that route. Usually, the routes are 1 credit (for short distances such as from Siem Reap to Bangkok), while routes such as Kuala Lumpur to Manila take 3 credits. Note on rare occasion, a route may require 5 credits, such as the Bali to Jakarta AirAsia flight.

So when deciding to buy either the 30 or 60 day pass, consider the number of credits you might need. The first provides 10 credits while the latter provides 20 credits.

Next, you need to find out if there is redemption availability for your routes.

Do this research BEFORE you buy the pass, because you don't want to be surprised if you look for dates and the redemption isn't available.

What I did was I did a 5 city search, routing in between each city, and found out that one of the routes (Manila to Puerto Princesa) ... didn't have any redemptions available. Yet when I searched on the regular search engine, there were 3-5 flights available during those days that mentioned the redemption wasn't available.

In the end, I did NOT purchase the ASEAN pass.

When I calculated the flights purchased separately and when using the ASEAN pass, the cost was actually around similar or little bit more expensive on ASEAN pass due to not being able to find a credit redemption with one leg.

So it just made sense to book all of the flights individually using the regular AirAsia search.

To me the ASEAN pass is more of a gimmick than a money saving pass. Definitely a great marketing tactic tool.

Again to summarize:

A. Research the cities you want to go

B. Determine if you have enough credits to get to each point to point city route.

C. Review the availability to redeem those credits on those routes.

D. Then you can actually purchase the pass, after you do ALL that research.

Saves you time and headaches.

Have any of you bought the ASEAN pass with AirAsia before?
