Will Scott (part 3)

Ten minutes later, Cutter was running down the street, his torn leather jacket wrapping around his bulky frame as the wind tugged at it, urging him to turn back. It was getting dark now, and the breeze was carrying the storm inwards from the sea.

Perhaps she was right. He was pretty useless after all. He was twenty five now, one year off. One more year before the average recall. One year off the point where statistics would state that he, as a bear, should be dead.

The carriers all had their recalls, the point at which their Dna could finally no longer take the strain of being a half breed, and would finally disassemble and break down, leaving the carrier to die a hideously painful death as their organs failed, one at a time. The carrier numbers used to be high, at one stage they were counted in four digits. But over time the reptiles and the recall got them all. From his knowledge, Cutter and Eagle were the last known non-reptiles. Maybe that would change tonight.

Cutter gasped as he ran, his tattered lungs struggling to pull in enough air. He coughed and blood ran over his lower lip, leaving trailing marks along his heaving chest before dropping to the ground. He would have been more careful about leaving a trail, but he smelt the storm coming. It was going to be ferocious. A small half grin slipped along the side of his face for a second, before vanishing so suddenly it almost made it doubtful that his hard face had ever smiled before. His blue eyes gleamed with life though; he liked storms. He wasn’t sure whether it was a part of his animal nature or his human side, but he always had. The sky flashed and then creaked with a great roiling thunder, and the first droplets fell around him. They would wash away his trail in seconds, but he still had to be careful; most types of reptiles were naturally good hunters, and with the right training would easily find him.

He slid into a side street and paused for a second. He had to think. Eagle would be fine, she could fly away from most dangers. But on the ground, far from her help, he was in danger. There had to be an easier way, his chest was already aching from the short distance he had run. Something in the corner of the alley he was standing in caught his eye. A small metal grate, a little more than a half meter in diameter. The sewers. He smiled, and knelt down beside it. All roads lead to Rome. Or in this case, all sewers to the sea. It was at least an inch thick of steel. Too easy. He lifted is good arm above his head, and brought his fist crashing down into the plate of metal. One of his knuckles broke, but the metal shattered, and he threw it to the side.

His arm shifted momentarily, and he had to focus to bring it back under control.

That wasn’t a problem though, it was actually rather useful. The cuts on his left wrist had healed into thin scars, and the bones he had broken only moments ago were now completely fine. He flexed his hand experimentally. Despite the recall, carrier healing rates were something that made him happy he was one. They had saved him from death more than once. Eagle had mentioned it was something about the huge energy running through them. It didn’t surprise him, controlling it every day made him attune to it more than most.

He rose from his position and stood next to the now open manhole. A foul stench of sewerage rose to meet his sensitive nose, and Cutter had to struggle not to throw up.

His animal instinct was to immediately turn around and leave, the stench was almost unbearable. But he had to get to Eagle, and in this case, his human side prevailed. Gritting his teeth, he stepped over the edge, and slipped down into the inky darkness.
