The Mussel-Shaped Staircase (how to edit a boring photo)

The title says it all - there's not much else about this staircase. I took the photo in a shopping mall while waiting for my girlfriend to try some clothes on. What's more interesting about it is how I turned the boring original version into this abstract looking architectural piece.

**Taken with Lumix G80 & Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 @ 25mm, f/3.5, 1/160 sec., ISO-1000. Edited in Capture One Pro**

The original photo, which I find rather "meh".

First of all, I cropped the "meh"-picture and looked at it for a few seconds thinking that the only way I could make this work is B&W. So, I desaturated it by enabling the "Black and White" tool and increasing the contrast. I also fine-tuned the brightness and the contrast by pulling the RGB-curve down. Then, I increased the clarity "Clarity" by 7 and "Structure" by 45 in order to sharpen the image.

Next, I decided that I want to hide all the details at the bottom of the staircase; I wanted to create the illusion of a deep black hole. I achieved this by adding an adjustment layer, drawing a mask over the area that I want to darken, and decreasing the exposure until it all became pitch black.

The "Black and White" tool that I enabled earlier is quite powerful as it gives you the option to manipulate the brightness of single colors. As I wanted to have more contrast in the image, I brightened the yellows and darkened the reds. Then, I pulled "Highlights" all the way up to 100 in order to recover as many details in the bright parts of the image as possible.

Last but not least, I added "Film Grain" and "Vignetting", and applied a YellowBlue split toning under "Styles & Presets".

Fabulous final image Daniel. I actually prefer text posts like this. Videos can also be good if the presenter explains clearly and in sequence the steps ~ Without overly doing the preambles etc. 

I've been teaching myself how to use Lightroom and love it. Learnt PS but years ago and would like to relearn it again now. Resteemed.🦋

Thank you, Ally! Your resteem and feedback are much appreciated! As for Photoshop, I have noticed that I tend to forget its shortcuts and functions if I don't practice it regularly. Lightroom is pretty powerful too. Do you use it for all of your photos?

I used to use Photoshop until I changed my computer and then used GIMP as it was free but it took quite a bit of relearning. At the beginning of this year, a friend gave me her (not so old) mac as she was updating and I started using Lightroom to edit all my images then. 

I have ideas for drawings and paintings I'd like to start as soon as possible now, but would like to do some 'roughs' in PS to begin with. Want to superimpose images and as far as I know I can't do that in Lightroom? 🦋

I always shoot in raw and I have a Sony A7ii, and I have only used lightroom before, and it's great. But I'm always willing to try new stuff. And in terms on what camera I use, does capture one pro only support certain cameras?

Thanks for posting @irreverent-dan  Useful information.  I use Lightroom and it has very similar functions. I have an Olympus EPL5 and unfortunately the noise at ISO 1000 makes producing a good photo quite difficult.

Thank you @tomcarpenter! Yeah, the two programs are very similar, the only reason I switched to Capture One a couple of years ago was the fact that it was better at handling Fuji's RAF files. As for your EPL5, that's not good :/

Yes @irreverent-dan I have also a Fuji X-Pro1 and it is a great camera except..... I find that often trees, grass, vegetation looks like worms.  I have converted to jpeg using Lightroom, in camera, Silkypix, Raw Therapee and even the online converter at https://raw.pics.io 

I never get a really satisfactory result.  So Fuji is great for street, abstract and so on.  For landscape I use my Canon or the Olympus (with Low ISO).
