This is probably true all around the world as well but when you live in a foreign country and feel the urge for the tastes of home you have a couple of options really:  

1:  Buy an imported product at a premium price
2:  Take a gamble on the locally-produced copy of said product

Most recently I started to have a craving for peanut butter on toast.  It's something  I have enjoyed my entire childhood and now as an adult, i still crave it from time to time.  I was shopping in a shopping center that has a decent amount of foreigner-oriented products and spotted the peanut butter section.

They had the international brands that you would expect such as Jif and Skippy, they even had Peter Pan which surprised me.  These products also cost near 300 Baht a jar (this is around $10.)  Now, maybe memory is not serving me correctly but $10 for a jar of peanut butter seems a bit steep to me.  The jar of locally-produced Tesco peanut butter was right next to these jars for less than half the price at 120B, which is around $4 and in my mind is more of what I feel a jar of peanut better is worth.  

In the past generic brands have always served me right and except in rare instances I don't really feel as though there was any sort of noticeable difference between the two.  They would be so incredibly similar that I actually dreampt up conspiracy theories where I feel all of them are actually made in the same factory and just slap different labels on the jars.  

This was not this case with this particular product.

For starters, the container was damn near impossible to open.  I had to get a knife involved.  Then, one i tried to retrieve the peanut butter, it didn't even stick to the knife, it kept falling all over the place.  I did finally get it spread, and then worst part came into play.  It doesn't even taste like peanuts.  I don't know what's going on here but it isn't worth the discounted price.   

Live and learn i guess:  I will not be purchasing this product in the future and will probably just have to splurge on the "real" brand.  I likely wont even finish this jar but i suppose that is one of the good aspects of peanut butter:  It stays good pretty much forever.
