If you look at it, the bottom of a capillary tube filled with mercury would seem narrowed. On the way up, mercury is able to handle obstacles in that section.

When we remove the thermometer from the mouth, the temperature at the ball where the mercury holds decreases. However, the mercury yarn in the tube does not fall (remain in the highest place). The mercury in the shelter will shrink again although this mercury can not pull the whole yarn because its attraction is not strong enough. 

The attraction between the atoms in mercury is too weak to overcome the pull down force. It also explains why mercury is liquid. Thus, the mercury thread is severed just above the narrowing section like a broken thread which is broken at its thinnest part. The mercury continues to shrink away from the vacuum above it.

You can flick the thermometer in a circular motion, swing, or centrifugal force that will throw the mercury thread outward or toward the ball of the shelter. This force is strong enough to overcome the friction that arises in the constriction.

Jika kalian perhatikan, bagian bawah tabung kapiler yang diisi air raksa pasti terkesan menyempit. Dalam perjalanan naik, air raksa mampu menangani hambatan pada bagian tersebut.

Ketika kita mengeluarkan termometer dari dalam mulut, suhu pada bola tempat menampung air raksa menurun. Tetapi, benang air raksa dalam tabungnya tidak turun (tetap berada di tempat tertingginya). Air raksa di penampungan akan menyusut kembali meskipun  air raksa ini tidak dapat menarik seluruh benang karena gaya tariknya tidak cukup kuat.

>gaya tarik-menarik antara atom-atom dalam air raksa terlalu lemah untuk mengatasi gaya tarik ke bawah. Hal ini juga menjelaskan kenapa air raksa berwujud cair. 

Maka, benang air raksa terputus tepat di atas bagian penyempitan seperti benang jahit yang putus pada bagian tertipisnya. Air raksa terus menyusut meninggalkan ruang hampa di atasnya.

Kalian bisa mengibaskan termometer itu dengan gerakan melingkar, mengayun, atau gaya sentrifugal yang akan melontarkan benang air raksa ke arah luar atau ke arah bola penampungan. Gaya ini cukup kuat untuk mengatasi gesekan yang timbul pada bagian penyempitan.
