Hello everyone and welcome to my review of the new film, Spider-Man Homecoming! I've always been a fan of Spider-Man, way back when I was a kid I would read the comics and watch the cartoon show after school. Once the superhero genre started to become popular in the mainstream, we started getting big budget blockbuster comic book films. When I first saw the Tobey Maguire one, back in 2002, I loved it and couldn't wait for more awesome Spider-Man movies. Unfortunately after the first one it all started to go downhill. There were two sequels to the 2002 movie that were pretty good, but by the third one I had seen enough of Tobey Maguire. Then Sony tried to reboot the franchise with Andrew Garfield as the lead, but those were so bad they never even bothered to finish the trilogy. Finally Marvel got the rights back to Spider-Man, and they entered him in the MCU, Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first time we got to see the new Spidey was in Captain America, Civil War, where he was recruited by Tony Stark. He was only in Civil War briefly but it gave me hope that we would finally get a well done Spider-Man movie soon.

This new Spider-Man is played by Tom Holland, I don't know anything else that he's been in, but he's great as Peter Parker. He fits the bill for everything Spider-Man in known for, skinny, nerdy, average looking kid. It also helps that Tom Holland is a good actor and does a good job of making the character likable. In Homecoming Peter Parker is still in school, but very distracted by the fact that he was a part of the Avengers, and desperately wants Tony Stark to call him back on the team. When he's not in school he puts the Spider-Man costume on and goes around New York City looking for petty crimes to stop.

This movie doesn't waste any time with the same old origin story that we've seen many times before. There's no part where Peter gets bit by a spider or where Uncle Ben gets killed by a mugger and says some motivational last words. Instead they get right into it. Aunt May is played by the beautiful Marisa Tomei, she only has a small part in the movie. Peter's best friend is a kid named Ned, he's a nerdy unpopular kid who is a whiz with computers. He plays the comic relief in a sense and almost became annoying but for the most part I liked him.

As Spider-Man goes around the city at night he comes across a group of thugs who are using these weapons made of alien technology. As he looks into this further he realizes there is a bigger operation here that he needs to take down. Tony Stark has given him a new Spider-Man suit with all kinds of new gadgets, and even has a built in AI that talks to Peter. At first I thought this was too much like Iron Man, but the movie deals with this in a satisfying way. Peter can't figure out the complicated AI system and it actually messes him up more than anything else. As Spider-Man deals with his new suit, he eventually finds out that the man behind these new alien weapons he's been seeing is a man called, The Vulture.

The new villain in Homecoming is played by Michael Keaton. I've been a big fan of his ever since he played Batman back in the 80's. One thing I liked about The Vulture is that he's not some all powerful alien who's trying to take over the world. He's just a regular guy who got screwed over by the government and is trying his best to get by. He goes down the wrong path and in a moment of desperation makes some bad decisions, turning him into a bad man. The stakes are a lot smaller in this film, but the characters are well done so it doesn't take anything away from the tension. Spider-Man finds out that The Vulture is behind all these weapons he keeps seeing and devises a plan to take him down.

All the characters in Spider-Man Homecoming are well done and likable. Tom Holland does a great job as the new lead, and Michael Keaton, who is always awesome, is a fantastic villain. I was a little worried that this might turn out to be another cookie cutter Marvel movie, and it kind of is, but those two elevate it to something more than that. I can't tell you what a relief it is that we finally got a new Spider-Man film that wasn't mediocre. If you're a Marvel fan or just a fan of Spidey I think you will definitely enjoy this movie. I give Spider-Man Homecoming a grade of.......
