Frank Heads To Hollywood And Meets Tom Mix

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in a series about one of the best Texas Rangers  to ever wear the badge, the great Frank Hamer, who was brought out of retirement to take down Bonnie and Clyde. 


## Recap

In [the last post](https://steemit.com/history/@janton/frank-is-laid-up-while-the-feud-cools-down) Frank was recovering from gunshot wounds, again, as the feud with his new wife's family and the Sims clan gradually subsided.

## Today's story

Frank needed alot more time to recover and hey, when you marry into money you might as well enjoy it, right? So he, Gladys, and the girls, Trix and Beverly, piled into their brand new Cadillac touring car and headed West to California.

This is a 1918 Cadillac similar to theirs:

>I'm guessing it was a wedding gift from Billy Johnson because Frank was broke. I reckon the price of a new car was cheap seeing how Frank took out their biggest threat in the Sweetwater fight and now they were free from danger.

Gladys's father had a vacation home North of Pasadena, California in Atladena. And that was just 14 miles from downtown Los Angeles. The highway system in 1918 was not exactly good. In fact, not only did they not have Freeways but they didn't even have **Highways.** 

## Traveling was an "adventure" back then

Arizona and New Mexico had nothing but dirt roads, and paths, which turned to mud when it rained, so much of the road was deeply rutted. It took awhile but they made it, I'm sure it was an adventure. I'm not sure how old the girls were by then. I think about 6 and 8. 

>Oh, I don't think I ever talked about Frank and Gladys's daughters. They fell in love with Frank as soon as they met him. He was wonderful with kids and loved them to pieces too. 

## Life was good!

So this was a very good time in all of their lives, getting away from the stress, hatred, insults, threats, and dangers(which Gladys herself had pretty much single-handedly caused). 

**AND**, she was pregnant! So things were really  looking up for Frank because he'd always wanted kids.

## Life was so good they decided to extend their vacation

Touring the countryside was all the rage back then, especially when you could do it in class with a brand new Cadillac. They drove through the orange groves, went to the beach, the mountains, the city. Life was grand. 

Of course, in Los Angeles, Hollywood was new but booming and movies were another national rage and favorite pastime. Only, back in 1918 they were only producing silent films.

## Tom Mix was huge!

In the good ol days the film production and sets were open to the public so Frank took Gladys and the girls to see a Tom Mix movie set. He was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood.  He was a Western star and  a genuine horseman and trick roper. 

In many of his films he wore a ridiculously big hat! lol.

It's pretty funny because anyone who wasn't a "real cowboy" who'd worked as one on a ranch..well...Frank was totally disgusted with those guys and called them "Drugstore Cowboys." So Frank and Tom Mix was a very unlikely pair.

**PS-** Well, in yesterday's post we had a Bacon vending machine! Wow. But if you don't eat pork that's okay because today we have a machine that every Vegetarian would love, a French Fry vending machine!

The machine says "Just made" but I think they mean just heated up! I'd like to see inside to see how they heat them.

And if that ain't good enough for ya you can have Pop Tarts for dessert from this pop tart vending machine. A dozen flavors! The combo of these machines would be a junk food junkie's paradise.

That french fry machine needs to really be placed beside that bacon machine, and then a cheese sauce vending machine with multiple flavours of cheese beside that and.. yum. Meals for everyone!

Can you imagine driving from Texas to California in one of those cars? I wonder if either of hte girls ever asked "Are we there yet?"

lol! Cheese sauce vending machine..yes that would definitely do it sir wwwiebe! It would be an unbeatable combination. 

I bet it took those guys many days to drive that stretch, probably took a week! I've never riden in a car like that, I wonder if they were comfortable? Probably freeze in the winter and I know you'd bake in the summer!

Oh that sounds perfect for a bowling alley! They probably did. About the West, wouldn't that be something? I mean you wouldn't have the super highways but you'd have gorgeous country and no or very little traffic!

That drive through the orange groves sounds lovely. I think the whole adventure of the drive sounds great, until you take into account the probably very limited accommodations along the way. And I'm guessing that new Cadillac was not exactly a smooth ride.

Howdy ginnyannette! I'd love to be able to ride in one of those and experience the ride, it's probably feel like riding in a wood wagon! Yes, the gas stations had to be far apart and I'm sure they had to plan carefully. 

I'd still love to try it though. Almost no traffic, just gorgeous countryside. But I know they didn't have air conditioning so that would be tough in the summer.

My dad and uncles used to tell me how much they liked Tom Mix when they were kids.  I've never seen one of his movies.

A long driving trip is not one of my favorite things to do even now, so I can't imagine driving on a long trip in one of those cars on crappy dirt roads, and I don't think cars had shock-absorbers back then - just springs.

Still, there was probably little to no road rage then.  A different time.

Howdy sir free-reign! I agree, I'd probably hate the rough ride but would love the gorgeous countryside and light traffic! I bet the gas stations were few and far between though so you'd have to plan carefully. Oh, no air conditioning either so traveling in the summer would be brutal!

I think as late as the 50s and 60s, it took lots of planning for long trips because of things like the availability of gas stations to continue on driving.  Like you said there weren't even *highways* early on.  In the 50s and maybe even the early 60s, Route 66 was the only  cross-country driving solution there was in  the U.S.

But I agree with you - driving on a trip back then provided more opportunities to take in the beauty of the land, and the travelling wasn't as rushed as it is now.   The drive was part of the whole experience, and not just a way to get there.

Howdy Sir @janton, I love to look at pictures from the old days and I think those roads were similar to the ones that they had here. All dirt roads and the mountain passes were unbelievable.
Travelers had to take their ox wagons  apart and rope them up the almost vertical inclines. I cannot imagine roping up one ox instead of a team of 8 oxen, one by one. Tough guys in the old days.
A meeting between Frank with an actor is certainly going to be interesting!

They used to slip a leather sheet under the torso of the ox with four ropes tied to each corner to haul the oxen up my friend.
The oxen became airborne in the lifting process.

I wouldn't mind driving that Caddy down town! No t in the winter, though. That would be uncomfortable. 

As for the vending machines, I wonder if that pop tart one actually toasts them for you. That would be a nice touch! And possibly an insurance claim in the making.

lol! An insurance claim because someone would try to eat a smoking hot pop tart and burn themselves right?  I agree about the Caddy, I'd love to see how they drove. Probably pretty nice until you hit some rough spots, I don't think they had shock absorbers back then.

Oh yeah! You got that right Janton! Junk food junkie paradise.............and that covers it all the food vending machines, except the bag of potatoes! Nothing can beat that! Pure vegan whole food, lol. All we need to go with it are beans and cabbage and we are all set! LOL!

Anyway, I am glad Frank is enjoying life for change, he deserves it. And he is going to be a daddy wow! That's really amazing!  But I am laughing at those drugstore cowboys as he calls them, that is hilarious! Silent movies!!! Can you imagine being in Hollywood back then???

Howdy again Miss Lena! I agree about the potato vending machine, we need more of those. lol.  Yes Frank is in a very good period of his life. Those silent movies were so funny to watch but it was serious money.

They said that Tom Mix was making $7,500 a week back then! That's crazy even today but back then it was unimagineable!

I am so happy to hear that Gladys was pregnant and that they all got away for a wonderful, well deserved vacation.  That road trip must have been a rough one, even in that beautiful Cadillac.
