# _High Spirits - Chapter 9 - Song of Angels, Book IV_

Unbeknownst to the soldiers fighting in the nexus of universes, the United States and its allies, and in some cases even those who are opposed to it began to do nothing but search the Earth for the vortexes.  Intelligence was passed and the countries with the means, the Russian Federation, the People's Republic of China, the European Union and anyone with a satellite surveillance system scoured the entire earth.

The battle was on.  The United Kingdom found a set though it remains classified and annihilated it and all associated with it except for the chief high priest.  British Commandos hit the vortexes site and captured both the personnel and all the machinery.  They now owned twelve pieces.  They just had to collect them.

It was a damp, overcast day.  The wind was calm an hour past dawn.  Colonel Godfried Wadsworth a medium man of thirty five years, who looked bald because his hair was razor short, stood out in a field at a classified location, fatigued with a hundred battle ready commandos all about.  Two of them held Nefarel, the high priest on his knees.  Wadsworth held the barrel of his Glock to Nefarel's temple, "Turn on these machines or die."  Wadsworth cocked the Glock.

Nefarel had an ancient tablet on the ground before him made of clay and on it was writing in Akkadian which none else could read.  A soldier with a camera and another with sound equipment captured the events as Nefarel began his chant of the words on the tablet while all others remained silent.

"They are coming on sir, opening up," A captain reported as they observed four thin columns reach toward the sky.  After a minute passed, "They are opening wider, expanding."

"Replay the tape," Wadsworth said to the filming documentary team.  "Make certain it is good.  Copy it.  Send it in."  To the captain that reported the status of the vortexes, "How many opened, captain?"

"Twelve sir.  They are spread out across a thousand square miles."  The captain replied.

"Colonel, Headquarters has received the documentation both video and audio." The film crew officer said.

"Ready yourselves to film this."  Wadworth ordered the crew and notify me when you are ready while he still held the pistol to Nefarel's temple.  After less than a minute, the film crew officer said,

"Ready and recording colonel," The documentation of reported.

"Turn it off," Wadworth ordered Nefarel.

Though the day was cool, Nefarel dripped sweat as he read the tablet backwards.

After about a minute, "The vortexes are collapsing colonel," The captain reported.  Another minute passed and the captain said, "They are gone."

"Do we have that recorded with both audio and video?"  Wadsworth asked the film crew officer.  After a minute or so passed the documentation officer replied,

"Video and audio are excellent and each copied colonel."

"Send it and prepare to film and record, then let me know when you are ready," Wadsworth said.

After a few moments the documentation officer reported, "The video and audio are sent and received."

"What are the minimum numbers of vortexes that allow for travelling?"  Wadsworth asked Nefarel.

"Three."  Nefarel answered.

"And how do we make them non-operational," Wadsworth asked Nefarel.

"Separate the two components and keep them separate and a vortex is not functional."  Nefarel replied.

"Which one is the main controller for the rest?"  Wadsworth asked.

"That one over there," Nefarel pointed while kneeling, not looking up.

"And how do we keep it from turning back on?"  Wadworth asked.

"Separate the three components and it will not function."  Nefarel answered.

"Pass the orders to disassemble the components of the furthest nine and bring their pieces here."  Wadsworth ordered the captain who then repeated the orders to commandos units near each one.  "Once the nine are disassembled notify me and report in captain."

"How long have these vortexes been in place in Britain?"  Wadsworth asked Nefarel.

"Forty-two years."  Nefarel replied.

The sounds of choppers moving closer grew louder as the pieces that caused the vortexes to manifest were brought.

"Are the nine disassembled?"  Wadsworth asked the captain.

"They are colonel and their pieces are separate and will arrive shortly."

"Documentation officer let me know when you are ready."  Wadsworth ordered.

"Recording Colonel."

"Nefarel, turn the three on."  Wadsworth ordered.

Nefarel read the table again.

"Opening sir," The captain reported.  A minute or two later he reported, "Fully expanded and operational."  A chopper landed and two men exited the chopper and ran to Wadworth, they reported.

"Commando," Wadsworth looked at the soldier holding the piece, "Give that to this fellow here."  The soldiers responded, “And take that tablet."  The soldier took the tablet after Nefarel held the piece.

"Stand him up."  Wadsworth ordered the two soldiers holding Nefarel.

"Still holding the Glock to Nefarel's temple Wadsworth said, "Start walking into that vortex."  Nefarel started walking.

"You three train your rifles on him and if he flinches or deviates shoot him."  Wadsworth ordered. "I want a platoon of volunteers to follow me into that thing."  The captain and eleven volunteers stepped forward.  "Follow me."  Wadsworth took a step after Nefarel and followed him.  He wasn't alone.
