I totally agree that you need to prove your value before you can expect to be paid for your work. And this gives you opportunities to build your portfolio with video content. However, if you come across an opportunity, or a client, and there is no video being shot, but you know that it would help them with their purpose, grab your gear, and offer to shoot video.

AND HERE COMES THE IMPORTANT PART: Since you found the opportunity, make sure to advise them that you're happy to shoot a video for them to show what you can bring to the table, and offer to sell the video to them after the fact if they like it and want to use it. That way you have planted the seed in their mind that you are not working for free, but offering your services, pending a decision for compensation. That's a big difference in business technique when running your own video production business than simply offering to shoot for people for free because you need opportunities. Remember, the way you first approach your client will impact how likely they are to pay you, or offer future paid opportunities. Thus, this is simply my technique, but you can use the method that best works for you.

Now, after editing is completed, when they see your content, you want to make them want your video so badly that they have to pay you for it. And remember, they will be thinking..."I remember he/she had mentioned that they do not ever work for free", so your offer will be in their subconscious. Still, perhaps they still cannot pay you, which is fine if they offer you future paid opportunities as a direct result of your work, which is often an even better result, because when they have time to plan paying you and providing a budget, you will likely have a much larger payout and opportunity on your hands.

Now...if they absolutely don't have the funds to pay you, I personally would still give them the video edit, because after all, they did agree to let you film it and did not guarantee payment. However, that will be your choice. Either way though, even if the client ends up not being able to pay you, you seized the moment in your approach, and made them seriously think about the true value that you brought to their project/business/endeavors. If not now, maybe they will approach you in the future. You never know.

Finally, here comes the “portfolio” bit. Every shoot adds to your personal brand, your portfolio of content, and displays to potential clients that you are in demand. This is as vital as finding clients in the first place, because your content needs to stand out. And the more you shoot, the more epic content you’ll have available to show off!

Hope y'all all get out there and dominate the day. Keep it epic!

*Also, apologies for the blurriness, I have no idea why that happened since I was focused when filming. But the message of the video remains, so onward and upward fam!*
