Of Swim Meets, Hot Sun and Long Days

Hey There SteemVerse Friends,

Another Swim Meet Weekend. The kind that spans three days, 12 hours a day. Where parents sit through the day with their children,  switching between the the Cheerleader and Tiger parent. Sometimes the shoulder to cry on, other times  pointing out their mistakes.

My day started at 5 a.m. (I guess better than training days when I wake up an hour earlier). Quick shower. Make breakfast for the kid, coffee for me. Then wake him up, gently persuasive. Running out of time, upset he is not getting up yet keeping my voice as gentle as I can. I want, I need him up but in a good mood. All this while my mood is taking a dip and I’m sure not being a morning person adds up.

Then quick check through the stuff he needs for a swim meet and off we go. We make it just in time. He runs off for warm up and I look for a spot to park. It is 6.45 a.m. and still so dark, I don’t see the yellow lines for the parking bays. My car isn’t straight but another Mum is already reversing in right beside me. Gahhhh. But good news is, there’s still ample parking space. 

I quickly grab his bag with his jammers, towel and such: The cooler box that has milk, yogurt and whatever needs to be kept in ice to last 12 hours at least. And off I go to find a spot to sit. 

No place. Most of the seats are taken by humans and their bags. Yes, the bags need their own seats! Even the floor in strategic spots have mats for the swimmers to rest. I walk around a bit in the dark and finally find a spot on the floor and plonk myself there. 

The sun starts rising and smiles down at us. It is hot and even though I am sitting in the shade, I have a tan line. This is only Day 1! It is uncomfortable, so I stand every now and then to stretch. My back is uncomfortable, my body is stiff. 

The pool is open air. The sun rises on one side while we sit on the side with shade. But by noon the sun is moving towards us, so we need to move to the other side, which now has heat emanating from the floor because the sun loved that side with all its might first.

They give us a 2 hour lunch break to our dismay. We want it over and done so we can go home. Well, 6 p.m. rolls around and finally the boy is done with 3/9 events. Six more to go over the next couple of days. 

I just want to say to parents who are supporting their child in a competitive or professional setting, give yourselves a pat on the back. The child who is a sportsperson or a model or actor, or some sort of prodigy, nobody sees behind the scenes where the supportive parent is trying to make it all work. So kudos to you 😊

Maybe no all had a prodigy child but I believe  all parents who love their child made or possibly to get them a great life and made then accomplish all their goals...

I have no doubt most parents do their best for their children 
But I have to say when a child is in competitive sport, it’s a commitment that’s challenging 
Two sessions a day, 6 days a week. 
I for one am unable to commit to the kind of training schedule .... I am only doing a little more than half that’s required and I am already tired
It requires a lot of time and patience  
And usually the supporting parent of that child is only in the background ... the glory usually goes to the child
So kudos to the parent ... 😊
