Market Friday : Sightseeing Captain Bush lane in Bangkok, เดินสำรวจตรอกกัปตันบุช

### This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by the lovely and very kind @dswigle.  This is a continuation from my last Market Friday post, as I continued to walk towards the old part of Bangkok by the river.   This area used to be populated by those Europeans who came to live and work in Siam over a hundred years ago.

Trading and commercial activities happened along the water front as the most convenient transport during that time was rowing boats.  Rivers and canals were the life blood of the capital city although the European diplomatic community did manage to lobby the King for the first road to be constructed for their horse-drawn carriages!  You could imagine all these posh carriages having recreational exercises during the weekend along the New Road. They were in long fluffy skirts and three piece suits with hats and canes. The local Thais in simple cotton clothes stood by the road side, watching these crazy foreigners having their weekly races in bewilderment.

Behind the New Road is a small lane called Captain Bush where there are still several old neo-colonial style buildings.  The most prestigious is House No 1 which used to be Captain John Bush’s family home.  Captain Bush arrived in Siam during the Reign of King Mongkut or King Rama 4th.  After the signing of the Bowring Treaty between Siam and Britain, he was recruited to manage the port activities.  Captain John Bush got the position of Harbour Master.  He held this position for thirty years and got knighted as the Siamese Luang Wisoot Sakaradit Chao Ta.

Captain Bush’s house was built along the Italian style villa. After his death in 1905, the house became the office of a French distillery company.  Through time the house became unoccupied and neglected for years.  Recently, the owner of the land (the Crown Property Bureau) has renovated House No1 to its former glory and it has become a venue for weddings and social functions.

Next to the lawn of House No.1 sits a row of historical warehouse belonging to Louis T. Leonowens Ltd. Louis was the son of Ann Leonowens, the Welsh lady who became English teacher for King Mongkut’s Royal children.  So, Louis became a childhood friend of King Rama V who later helped Louis with generous assistance on his business ventures.  This old warehouse used to store logs and other goods for exporting to European countries.

I caught the wooden door opened but I could hardly see the old building inside.

The Portuguese Embassy, the oldest embassy in Siam, situates at the corner of Bush Lane with its huge wooden door like in the old castle.  There is a big mango tree in front of the embassy.  The guard told me that the squirrels were very quick to take a bite of all the ripe mangoes so he hardly had a chance to get any ripe mango.

Opposite the Portuguese Embassy is a row of huge bronze animal statues. They just sit in front of the four floors’  building which is the company making all these bronze models. Opposite House No.1 is the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel.

วันนี้เราจะพาไปเดินดูตรอกกัปตันบุช หรือซอยเจริญกรุง30 ในเขตบางรัก เราเดินเล่นต่อจากตึกไปรษณีย์กลาง และเดินเลยโกดังโบราณที่กลายเป็นร้านกาแฟสุดเดิ้นและทันสมัยในหมู่ศิลปิน เราก็จะเจอสถานทูตปอตุเกส ที่หัวมุมตรอกกัปตันบุช ถนนแถบนี้เคยเป็นแหล่งที่อยู่อาศัย และที่ตั้งสถานกงสุลตลอดจนธุรกิจของชาวต่างชาติ ตลอดริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาในเขตบางรัก ที่หน้าสถานฑูตปอตุเกสมีต้นมะม่วงใหญ่มาก ออกลูกเต็มต้น เราก็ถามเจ้าหน้าที่ว่ามะม่วงอร่อยไหม เขาบอกว่ากระรอกแอบกัดกินมะม่วงสุกหมด จนพวกเขาไม่มีโอกาสได้ชิม ตรงข้ามเยื้องสถานฑูตมีร้านหล่อรูปปั้นสัตว์ตัวใหญ่มหึมาเท่าของจริง วางเรียงรายหน้าตึกเต็มไปหมด เราก็สนุกกับการถ่ายรูปมาก และอยากได้บางอย่างไปตั้งไว้ในสวนให้แมวเล่น แต่มันหนักเกินไป เราไม่สามารถยกไปได้

เดินถัดไปหน่อยเราก็เจอ บ้านเลขที่1 ซึ่งเคยเป็นบ้านของกัปตันบุชมาก่อน กัปตันจอห์น บุชมาถึงสยามในสมัยในหลวงรัชกาลที่4 และเขาได้รับตำแหน่งเป็นเจ้าท่าถึง 30ปี เขาช่วยจัดระเบียบและดูแลเรื่องเรือสินค้าที่เข้ามาค้าขายกับสยามในสมัยที่รุ่งเรืองมาก เขามีบทบาทสำคัญมากในการพัฒนาท่าเรือ และอู่ต่อเรือในสมัยนั้น กัปตันบุชมีความรํ่ารวยมากจากธุรกิจการต่อเรือ และเขาสร้างคฤหาสน์หลังใหญ่มีแบบคล้ายวิลล่าทางตอนเหนือของอิตาลี นั่นคือบ้านหมายเลข1ในปัจจุบัน

กัปตันบุชเสียชีวิตในปี 2448/1905 ไม่นานนักบ้านของเขาก็กลายเป็นสำนักงานของบริษัทกลั่นสุราของชาวฝรั่งเศส แล้วบ้านก็ร้าง และขาดการดูแลทำให้ชำรุดทรุดโทรมไปมาก จนกระทั่งเมื่อเร็วๆนี้ บ้านเก่าหลังนี้ได้รับการบูรณะให้กลับมาสง่างามและหรูหราอีกครั้ง ปัจจุบันที่นี่กลายเป็นที่จัดงานแต่งงาน งานสังสรรค์ และการประชุมสัมมนา

ส่วนตึกข้างๆบ้านหลังนี้ ที่ยังดูเก่าแก่และยังไม่ได้รับการบูรณะนั้นเคยเป็นโกดังเก็บของ ของห้างหลุยส์ ที ลีโอโนเวสน์ ซึ่งนายหลุยส์เป็นลูกชาย ของแหม่มแอนนา เป็นแหม่มที่เป็นครูสอนภาษาอังกฤษ ให้กับบรรดาพระราชโอรสและธิดาในหลวงรัชกาลที่5 นายหลุยส์จึงได้รับความช่วยเหลือในการทำธุรกิจส่งออกไปยุโรปเมื่อโตเป็นผู้ใหญ่ ส่วนตรงข้ามกันก็เคยเป็นที่ตั้งของธนาคารฮ่องกงเซี้ยงไฮ้  แต่ปัจจุบันนี้ได้ถูกรื้อไปหมดแล้ว และกลายเป็นโรงแรมรอยัลออคิดเชอราตันเรียบร้อยแล้ว

You must be following my tracks walked all that area a couple of weeks ago did you see the wall carving art work on the French Embassy brick wall just opposite them brass monkeys and elephant shop.

Hahaha! There must have been some kind of vibes attracting us to collide in some place in Bangkok! But the time machine was a bit out of sync! Probably you were there on a Sunday and I was there on Monday afternoon! 
That wall actually sent me crossing to the other side! Strange vibes! 

I think I’ll be meeting you by surprise one of these days!!

Hahaha...probably so but the thing is i might walk right pass you because i don't know what you look like but i am sure you will recognize me the Vin Diesel but not as tall...lol :)

I was there on the Sunday and i found that wall very fascinating i actually did do a #monochromemonday post on it :)

Wow! This was quite an amazing post! It is filled with so much history and stories of long ago and far away places. 

Your country has endured so much and so many different cultures moving about in and out. It is reflected in what Thailand is today, a wonderful country filled with magical things and places.

I am so glad that they have renovated the properties and made them into something useful. Those bronze statues are stunning.
