There are a lot of people out there that would consider the following images to be shocking and disgusting and I don't disagree with you.  Perhaps the "shock and awe" factor is part of it but it is not my (our) intention to gross anyone out or cause any problems.

We have no idea how these wounds happen but suspect that they are from being struck by a vehicle or some sort of fight between other homeless dogs that quickly become infected and later riddled with maggots.  This is such a tragic injury for a dog because there is nothing they can do to stop the spread if they can not clean the wound with their own tongues.  The heat and humidity combined with the high amount of flies that exist in Ao Nang cause this sort of infestation to set in rather rapidly and it is so tragic because the dog is literally being eaten alive by the creatures existing inside its body.   A truly agonizing and horrible way to die.

The wound was first spotted on this otherwise friendly street dog by a tourist who wished to not be named.  They first noticed it when they were petting this lovely creature and the dog winced when they touched his side because the wound was understandably quite sensitive.  Upon looking closer it was discovered that he had an open hole on his side and maggots were actually falling out of it.

This can be a tricky situation to treat because we don't actually know the amount of damage that the maggots have caused when the damage is completely internal.  It isn't terribly difficult to kill the maggots, but removing them is a different situation altogether because we would prefer to not cut the dog open.

Are you disgusted yet?  Well i hope so because this is an extremely common affliction for the street dogs of Thailand and treating it isn't every very expensive.  It costs around $30 for these procedures and we wish we could do them all.  Unfortunately in many situations, the dogs that are the most afflicted tend to be untrusting and unapproachable because of the pain they are in and we have no choice but to not assist them because we will not tranquilize animals in the streets -  They have to come to us willingly.  Thankfully, this good boi was extremely approachable and friendly despite his affliction.  

We have been experiencing a decent run as far as fundraising is concerned and were able to help this guy out.  It is unfortunate that due to limited funds, there are dozens of others with the same problem that we simply have to ignore, even though it breaks our hearts to do so.
