अर्थ मंत्र भी है, जो मंत्रों का स्वामी वही ब्रह्मणस्पति। भृगु ऋषि के पुत्र शौनक ने गणेश को मंत्रों का स्वामी मानकर पूजा है और उन्हें ब्रह्मा, सूर्य, चंद्र, इंद्र तथा विष्णु द्वारा पूजित देवता कहा है। गजमुखी होने की वजह से उन्हें ‘गजानन, लंबे पेट के कारण लंबोदर, सूपाकार कानों के होने से'गजकर्ण, लाल रंग वाला होने से ‘कपिल, बेडौल शरीर के कारण विकट तथा माथे चंद्रमाधारी होने से भालचंद्र कहा जाता है। नर और गज दो शरीर वाला होने से उन्हें ‘द्विदेहक' कहकर भी पुकारा गया है।
