Part Three - Plan Your Summer Garden

If you are on top of your game, you may already be planning your spring garden (it’s autumn where I live)! But the third part of Chapter One breaks down planning a summer garden!

Author Anna Hess writes about six main aspects of planning a summer garden - size, location, layout, record keeping, simple herbs/vegetables, and vertical gardening!

First, consider how large of a garden you need. Most beginners bite off more than they can chew so it’s recommended that an initial planting area should be no more than 144 square feet.

Second, start thinking about where this garden will be located. If you completed the suggestion from Part Two about “Surveying Your Site”, this step should be quick and easy.

There are many different factors that influence a garden’s location including distance from the main living area, fertility of soil, sunlight, access to water, etc.

Third, figure out the layout of your garden. Permanent beds with aisles are recommended because they produce more than row gardens. A typical raised garden bed should be approx. 4 feet wide so you can reach the middle from either side. Don’t forget to consider paths for walking, wheelbarrows, and lawnmowers!

Fourth, keep detailed records of what is planted where. It’s easiest to make a simple map or spreadsheet to record which plants are growing where throughout your garden. It’s also beneficial to write down whenyou planted and any other pertinent information including soil amendments, harvest information, and/or disease and insect problems.

Fifth, consider what to plant. Anna Hess includes an extensive list of simple vegetables and herbs to start with:

Swiss Chard

Okra

Summer Squash (including zucchini)

Green Beans

Tomatoes

Mint

Basil

Your choice(s) should be determined by personal taste preference and whatever you plan to make with your produce.

Finally, there is a small explanation of vertical gardening for those urban gardeners that don’t have much space to plan a summer garden! Vertical gardening is an excellent way to maximize production in small spaces because you expand your garden into a multi-dimensional attraction! Don’t hesitate to use trellises and hanging pots if you lack the yard to make raised beds!

Follow @kiaraantonoviche

First photo (modified by @kiaraantonoviche) and second photo from Pexels and used under the CC) license. Thanks for the intro to this book - not come across it before. I've just found it on Amazon UK as well - I will add this one to my Wish List. Maybe Santa Claus will spot it 😊 * https://www.amazon.co.uk/Weekend-Homesteader-Twelve-Month-Guide-Self-Sufficiency/dp/1616088826
