Comic Book Art - Traffic Review
Here we review original, pro, comic book art that has recently traded hands among art dealers. These images are high resolution photos of the original artwork, not prints.

Click on the header link to learn more about each piece.

# [Carrie Fisher as Leia by Gerardo Sandoval](http://www.gerardo-sandoval.com/)

Gerardo Sandoval reminds me much of Ramos, who we cover here regularly. Sandoval is a Mexican professional artist, working out of Mexico City every day. He seems to mostly speak Spanish, yet he has an undeniable passion and talent for comic book art. In the past 10 years, Sandoval has largely become one of my favorites and it is his unique shapes that draws me in every time.

Sandoval released this unpublished piece directly on his website shortly after Carrie Fisher died. He wrote up a really nice piece, entirely in Spanish. The dedication was serious, beautifully worded, entirely bitter sweet, and ended with...

"Rest in peace, our eternal princess."

It looks just like her and it breaks my heart to stare at it too long. Those eyes are perfectly dreamy, just as we all remember her.

# [Darth Vader Mythos by Gerardo Sandoval](http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1377291&GSub=140993)

Another Sandoval Star Wars piece is being covered here today and this one is currently listed on sale for $350.00. Here we see Vader reflecting, as he glares into the upper half of his helm. Superb line quality and confident strokes dominate the image with a wicked sort of style that seems to fit Vader's personality well.

It is not often we get such a good view of the inside of Vader's helmet like that. So while some imagination is being used here, I can still remember the basis of this design from the movies and how much mystery this costume carried.

# [Spawn Splash, Issue 62, Page 20 by Capullo & McFarlane](http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1376829&GSub=180978)

I own the first 100 Spawn comics, and this series is where I discovered the greatness of Greg Capullo, who is the greatest pencil artist in the world. Here Capullo provides the pencils and Todd McFarlane does the inking, creating one of the best comic book illustration teams of all time. I can still remember thinking McFarlane was the best ever at the time, then McFarlane himself commented that he had found someone new to work on Spawn that was better than himself. I did not believe it at the time, but today we all know it is true.

Out of all the details in this piece, my favorite part is the skull below Spawn's neck. Wonderfully wicked and detailed!

The owner of this piece is new to the "hobby" and has been told that it will all be downhill from here. That is hilarious if you can understand how rare and incredible this piece is. Capullo is well known for rarely selling his art, and when he does sell it, it is purchased off the market nearly instantly. Original Capullo art of this nature is then typically rushed away to some vault, not to be seen again for a very long time. Soak it up folks!

# [Joker and Harley by Jim Lee](http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1376069&GSub=85733)

The owner of this piece said it was a gift from someone who knew he loved comics. An original, unpublished drawing from Jim Lee himself is pretty rare and extremely impressive! Whoever went through with commissioning Lee, had Lee include some sort of joke. Perhaps an inside joke?

I am not sure exactly what the text means but I was blown away seeing Lee working at such a level. I had to share this. Could you imagine getting something like this as a gift? Wow!

# [Amazing Spider-Man 575 page 23 by Chris Bachalo](http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1367852&GSub=61860)

I have seen some brutal work from Bachalo before but this time around he produces one of the meanest scenes we have seen. Spidey is beat down and he knows it, you can see the look of fear in his eyes as Hammerhead grabs him, helplessly, by the shoulders.

What comes next hurts. It hurts to watch, it is upsetting to read, and I can feel the pain as Spidey's face receives the headbutt.

The issue ends like this! Creating a pretty incredible cliff hanger with Spidey left in a pool of his own blood while Hammerhead stands over him.

Bachalo has captured an epic action scene here that includes lots of powerful emotions. The story is clear, the vision is horrifying. However, there is still a tiny bit of hope in reading the title of the next issue... THE HAMMER FALLS! Great job Bucky! I think you sold a number of subsequent issues with that final page cliff hanger.

# [Hulk/Pitt (1996) by Dale Keown](http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1377272&GSub=159519)

The owner is unsure how this piece came to be and they are likely working directly with Keown's own art dealer. This leads me to believe that this is a commission piece. I certainly have not seen every comic book in the world but I just cannot remember this piece being published.

Either way, it is an amazing piece of art from the master of drawing hulk-ish creatures, Dale Keown. The entire image absolutely tumbles with bounding muscles, claws, and gritting teeth.

@bryan-imhoff ·
That Bachalo piece is really interesting in that he took on that caption as part of the artwork. If I just saw it in the printed comic I'm sure I'd assume it was done digitally by the letterer. Reminds me of the innovative title layouts Will Eisner did on the Spirit. Great find.
