2차 세계 대전에 참전한 곰돌이 병사 - 행복전도사 불곰 '보이텍' 
2차 대전에서 맹활약한 불곰 '보이텍을 아시나요?

탱크나 비행기가 없던시절, 
육중한 코끼리나 잘 훈런된개, 문서를 전달했던 비둘기와 매 등은
고대의 전쟁에서 없어서는 안딜 어엿한 병기 였습니다.
고대에는 코끼리, 낙타, 코뿔소 등 다양한 전투에서 다양한 동물들이 인간들의 
전쟁에 참여 했었죠.

하지만 이번 이야기에 등장하는 불곰은 탱크도 비행기도
모두 있었던 20세기에 
군부대의 당당한 일원으로 부대원의 사랑을 독차지했던 
귀요미 병사였었어요. 

이제 사랑스러운 '보이텍'의 이야기를 들어 해볼게요~

1) 보이텍과의 첫 만남.
때는 1942년, 전 세계가 총소리와 폭탄 소리로 정신이 하나도 없고
암울했던 2차 세계대전이 한창일 때였습니다.
소련에 포로로 잡혀 있다가 풀려난 폴란드 병사들은 이동 중에 한 이란인 목동
소년으로 부터 아기 불곰을 사게 됩니다. 
아기 곰의 어미는 사냥꾼들에 의해 죽었고 목동 소년은 아직 
돌도 안 지난 아기 곰을 포대에 담아 데리고 다니고 있었죠.
군인들이 처음 아기곰을 발견했을 때, 아기 곰은 포대에서 나와
선임병사인 표토르에게 다가가서는 다리에 코를 비비고는 웃는 표정을
지었다고 합니다.
세상 살줄 아는 곰돌이 같지 않나요?

2)  사랑받는 보이텍.
보이텍의 귀여움에 마음이 사르르 녹아내린 군인들은
자신들이 가지고 있던 귀중한 전투 식량을 기꺼이 목동 소년과
아기 곰의 배룰 채우는데 썼습니다.
처음 영양 문제로 작고 약했던 보이택은 오래된 빈 보드카 병에
연유를 담고 입구를 손수건으로 막아서 젖병의 모양으로 
먹이기 시작했습니다.
특히 보이텍이 첫 만남부터 애교를 떤 
선임병사 표토르가 주는 연유를 곧잘 받아 먹었고
점점 과일, 꿀, 시럽, 마멀레이드 같은 것을 먹으며 쑥쑥 자랐죠.

3) 행복 전도사 '보이텍'

① 보이텍 이등병이 되다!!
이 아기곰운 곧 '웃는 전사'라는 뜻의 보이텍이란 이름을 가집니다.
군인들은 보이텍을 이등병으로 입양하자는 획기적! 인 생각을 하게 됩니다.
하지만 곰을 입양하는 일은 부대장의 허락이 있어야 가능했기에
군인들은 부대장의 눈치를 보다 둘을 소개 시켰는데 
다행이 부대장은 보이텍과 한눈에 사랑에 빠져 버립니다.
덕분에 보이텍은 단순히 애완동물이 아니라 부대의 마스코트로서
자기의 방과 침대까지 제공 받게 되죠.
다행이도 보이텍을 영입한 병사들이 물자 보급을 맡은 
자유 폴란드 2군단 22보급중대 부대원들이었기에 보이텍은 다행이 직접 전선에 투입되진 않았어요.
보이텍은힘든 전쟁에 
지친 군인들에게 웃음을 안겨주기도 했습니다.

② 맥주와 와인을 사랑한 보이텍.
보이텍은 맥주와 와인을 사랑하게 되었고 또 병에 담긴 맥주와 완인만 먹었다 하네요.
병이 비면 병을 들여다보는 시늉을 하면서 더 달라는 몸짓을 하곤 했답니다.
놀랍게도 술과 더불어 흡연을 즐기기도 했는데
불이 붙지 않은 담배는 거절했다고 하네요.
불 붙은 담배를 주면 한 입 피고는 입 안으로 휙 던져 씹어 먹으면서
매우 즐거워 했다고 합니다.



③ 센스 넘치는 보이텍.
술과 담배 외에는 보이텍은 목욕과 레슬링을 좋아했습니다.
하지만 아무리 귀요미라도 사실은 무시무시한 곰이다 보니
인관과의 레슬링에서 보이텍은 백전백승 이였다네요.
위험 했겠지만 당시 군인들이 입은 상처는 발톱에 약한 긁히거나
군복이 약간 찢어지는 정도였다고 해요.

 -4.  보이텍의 활약들 

① 보이텍, 도둑을 잡다 !
팔레스타인에 머물던 부대에 도둑이 들게 됩니다.
그런데 하필 도둑이 들어간 곳이 보이텍이 침실로 쓰던 탄약 창고였습니다.
거대한 곰을 보고 기겁을 한 도둑은 허둥지둥 달아나려다
결국 잡히고 맙니다. 
이후 보상으로 보이텍은 맥주 한 병을 받았죠.

② 보이텍, 포탄을 나르다.
이탈리아에 도착한 부대는 얼마후 1944년 본테카시노 전투에 참전하게 됩니다.
폭탄을 나르는 병사들은 본 보이텍은 누가 시키지도 않았는데
자기도 다른 병사들처럼 포탄을 들어 나르기 시작합니다.
보이텍은 단 한 발의 포탄도 떨어트리지 않고 꿋꿋하게 임무를 제대로 수행합니다.
이후 보이텍의 인기는 더더욱 높아져 결국 포탄을 들고 있는 보이텍의 그림은
부대의 문양이 되죠.

-5. 보이텍의 우울한 말년
1945년 전재이 드디어 끝났지만 폴란드 군이 돌아갈때 보이텍은 같이 가지 못합니다.
이후 영국 에든버러 동물원에서 살게 되죠.
늘 부대원들과 레슬링하고 샤워하고 사랑받았던 보이텍이기에 
동물원에 산다는건 보이텍에게 아주 우울하고 슬픈 일이었습니다. 
그렇다고 인간에게 완전히 길들여져 사냥이라고는 모르는 곰돌이를 
야생으로 풀어주는 것도 불안한 일이었겠지요.
보이텍의 전우들은 이후로도 보이텍을 만나러 찾아왔는데
영국이라 영어만 들리던 보이텍의 기에
폴란드가 들리면 신이나서 달려가 
어서 '담배를 내놓아라' 하는 시늉을 했다고 합니다.
그러다 1963년 22살의 나이로 평화롭게 세상을 떠나고 맙니다.
