I think that people are fear mongering corona virus because the Mass Media is promoting the narrative pretty well. It's all part of a bigger plan, we have yet to find out what's that plan.

- To rush some untested vaccines to the markets, as Americans love doing?

- Or to crash the giant Bull Market Run that has lasted 11 years already, because people are getting too confident that they can blindly buy any stock and make some extra cash?

- Or are they just distracting us as they allow the Industrial Military Complex to test new weapons on the Palestinian civilians, yet again?

The one thing I'm certain is that some really evil people are ruling the world, because we keep putting them in power.

Nice shot of the lizard.  It seems to have a copper color, which I haven't seen in any  lizards around here.

It's hard to tell if the Corona virus numbers are accurate or not, since the vast majority of cases seem to be coming from China and China is not the most transparent country in the world.

I see that China injected over 100 Billion dollars worth of their currency into their market to try to combat the economy slowing affects of this outbreak.  That might indicate that they think things are serious and could be ongoing.

I don't think "they" are behind this virus outbreak and I don't think it's part of a "bigger plan".  There is some chance of that, but I think it's slim.  I think it's just the nature of germs and immune systems that we periodically get outbreaks of contagious diseases.  It's just part of nature and not something people are purposely creating.  That's my opinion and I'm happy to consider other people's opinions.

Overall, the news are fairly rational in tone, although many articles simply mention the "confirmed" numbers. & these confirmed numbers are simply the official Chinese numbers, hence totally unreliable. In some cases they at least include some more realistic estimates.
Here on Steemit, there are sadly too many conspiracy theories. Wouldn't be so bad if there were any actual evidence for any of these. But for some people, eg. the existence of a bio-weapons laboratory near Wuhan is enough to conclude that the virus must have come from there.
But I digress...

Back to the original question: Whether anything is actually fear-mongering or under-reporting will only be clear if we have a real outbreak outside of China. Only then will we have proper numbers to judge.
