My entire career, in a single photograph!

<p>I’m back on the late night blog posting schedule, Steemit. During the week while @guthrie is at school, I’ve found a nice block of time to sit at @caffetto, edit and write. As his school is a charter school with a year long calendar, he has Friday’s off, thus weekends I tend to be back to these late night entries. Not all that bad as I’ve always been a nocturnal creature.</p>
<p>This evening, myself and @tarotbyfergus began our first games of a new […to us] Magic: The Gathering format; Modern. I started playing Magic about two years ago with @tarotbyfergus and @vermillionfox. @iamredbar joined us a bit later. We all played Standard, then more recently switched to Commander/EDH. That format has been the default ever since, but with new people joining our @caffetto circle of MTG players, Modern seemed to be a requested addition.</p>

<p>We all have a ton of cards from the previous expansion blocks, most of which have rotated out of Standard in to Modern anyway. We decided this Friday would begin the new format and I’d spent the afternoon finalizing my B/W Spirits deck. There is this unspoken thing when one of us introduces a deck that is <strong>clearly</strong> going to be a problem. We all know it. I feel this was my night. This deck <strong>is</strong> air right and dangerous. I’ll be doing one of my patented Magic: The Gathering posts in more detail soon, but the first ten games show the potential for a future champion.</p>
<p>I wanted to share with you all a photo from my book, <a href="workingclasspublishing.com/darkpinup.html"><em>Dark Pinup</em></a>, with @wcpublishing. It’s at the top of the page. @wcpublishing needed a photo of me to accompany the artist’s statement page. After some thought, I decided I wanted something different to represent “me”, as the artist. Something unique that would tell a story beyond a pensive photo of me in the shadows, holding a candle.</p>
<p>I decided on a box of travel receipts, bus and airport stubs. Metro cards and tokens from bars that’ve let me shoot in their space. Everything I’ve collected over the last five years on the road; hundreds of thousands of miles of travel. All with deep sentimental value, all reflecting the personal sacrifice to get to a point that a publisher would even want to print my work so that <a href="https://steemit.com/photography/@kommienezuspadt/workingclasspublishing.com/darkpinup.html"><em>Dark Pinup</em></a> could be made.</p>

<p>Amongst these keep sakes is a red hotel room key from The Redbury Hotel at the corner of Hollywood and Vine […a great Tom Waits song]. I spent my last $400 on a room there for my first shoot in Los Angeles, and the one that started my career on the west coast. That key card is where it all began. Taking big risks in the hopes of big rewards, that ultimately did pay off.<br>

your story motivated me to work harder. i have been working hardly on my steemit blog but saw not much people acknowledging it and it hurts but after reading your post , i am filled with new energy and thanks for that. i will surely consider buying your book

I uased to play MTG in the 90s. My deck was a blue "poke deck" - half manna, lots of low casting cost creatures and instants, so that I would poke you one point at a time and have an army of Tims and Ornithopters just thousand-cutting people before they had their first heavy hitter out in play. In a big group, I was not effective, but one on one that deck kicked ass. So a friend made an artifact manna-killing deck JUST to beat mine. I still had enough to win. He took his deck apart in disgust. 😂
I have killed with an Ornithopter. 😉

Great story dude. There's almost always a background to a lot of these shoots that most people don't get to see. It could be some epic journey that we as photographers had to take, or the model, or some strange back story to how the shoot came about in the first place. Maybe some weird or back back story to the location or how we ended up shooting there. I love details like that. Probably just because I've done so many shoots and realize the actual final images that most people get to see often end up being a small part of the overall adventure of creating them.

Thank you for sharing. It's always nice to see that last $400 pay off. Risk is worth it. My grandparents keep telling me to get a county job with retirement and have only recently stopped calling photography my hobby. Nobody will ever really know all the hours, legwork, and money that went in Dark Pinup. Glad to see someone on the other side!

Congratulations on the book! When and where can I get one? 
The travel stub souviniers, one of the greatest, to everyone else they are paper but to you they are each a story, a time stamped detail of your life. Memories hold quick to these scraps. Taking pictures must honestly be the easiest part of being a photographer sometimes.

I drive past The Redbury Hotel everyday on my way to work -- gorgeous hotel. Been wanting to stay there for years. 

Also been wanting to get back into magic! I shifted over to DnD a few years ago, but would love to pull out my white griffin deck and get a few games in. Thanks for the inspiration!
