Discover Radioactive Material With An Electron Avalanche

Some scientific discoveries just sound plain cool. This is exactly the case of the electron avalanche breakdown. Just hearing that brings images full of adrenaline and destruction. The truth is actually a bit less exciting but still quite amazing. An electron avalanche breakdown happens thanks to the electric field that significantly increases the amount of electric current.

A team from the University of Maryland recently showed that the electron avalanche breakdown isn’t just a cool sounding scientific term. They based a completely new method of detecting radioactive material from a distance. Using an infrared laser they cause the electron breakdown to happen near radioactive material even when it is shielded. This technology could scan trucks, wagon, ship containers, and even airplanes.

More traditional methods of detecting radioactive material use direct observation of radioactive decay and the particles that are created during the decay. That makes detecting radioactive material progressively harder as more distance gets involved. But the electron breakdown technique could potentially discover radioactive material from a distance of about a football stadium afar.

When radioactive material decays it ionizes nearby air. This creates a few free electrons that quickly bind to oxygen. This will happen even near shielded containers. When you aim an infrared laser at this area it will cause the electrons to unbind from the oxygen and causes the electron avalanche. The device is also capable of detecting the avalanche.

Currently, there is only one problem, the device is quite big. But within ten years the scientists would like to have the device that would fit into a van.
