Every day we bathe in a sea of radio-waves that carry a lot of energy. Maybe we could use the energy to power common electronic appliances.
![gadget2142921.png](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/kralizec/f34oI6MP-gadget-2142921.png)
Image by Shabaz khan from Pixabay * Be also sure to check out my other posts and follow me @kralizec and subscribe to my Youtube channel at [Kralizec Gaming Youtube Channel](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM6bVobsVUBzJ-oqajqI-eA)

Every device that sends out Wi-Fi also radiates waves in the terahertz range. These waves are between the microwaves and infrared radiation. And terahertz waves are also radiated by objects of any temperature. That means high-frequency terahertz waves are omnipresent. So - if found a way to utilize them - they could be an interesting source of alternative energy.

Imagine small modules that fit smartphones and other highly mobile devices that will constantly drain the excess energy of the terahertz waves and use them to charge the device. So far, the energy of the terahertz spectrum is going on completely unused because there hasn't been a usable technology that could mine and use it. Hiroki Isobe from the Materials Research Laboratory at MIT and his coworkers came up with a way how to mine the terahertz wave energy and transform it into direct current that can be used in many electronic devices. To achieve it they used the quantum properties of the ever so popular material graphene.

The scientists found out that when they combine graphene with another 2D material - in this case, boron nitride - the electrons align in a single direction. The incoming terahertz waves affect the electrons which then move in the device and thus create direct current. The very few devices that actually were capable of making electricity from terahertz waves so far usually needed extremely low temperatures to work making them somewhat impractical. You need to remember that the amount of terahertz waves everywhere around us is truly gigantic. If we managed to utilize them it would certainly help our current energy needs.
Sources:
* http://news.mit.edu/2020/energy-harvesting-wi-fi-power-0327 --- * If you like the content Iām producing about science maybe you will like the content I produce about gaming as well!
