The Old Dog Invites You: Come With Me For a Walk in My Yard
<html>
<p>Did you ever notice that you never <strong>really KNOW </strong>someone until you've seen them in their environment? That if you visit them at their home and spend time there your perception changes? The area or areas that we live in mould and shape us.</p>
<h1><strong>I Have Lived in Two Very Different Places</strong></h1>
<p>I spent the first 35 years of my life in the big city of Toronto and loved every minute of it. It was fun and exciting. Now I live in a more rural setting and I love it too.&nbsp;</p>
<p>What you see at a persons home can start to tell you who they are and why. So it's time to come with me for a walk in my yard. Actually in my posts I've shown you quite a few pictures of my home and the surrounding area and today I'd like to show you my in-laws place. The home is on the other side of the valley about 10 minutes away. It's an old farm house that they renovated about 30 years ago and it produces a lot of food for the family.</p>

<h1>A Typical Winter Day in Ticino</h1>
<p>It's winter so there are no leaves on the trees but you can also see more of the place this way.</p>

<p>In the above picture you can see what is probably the best view of the house. It's the main entrance and as you may be able to tell the door height is very low. I bang my head constantly, perhaps that's why I do goofy things sometimes! The inside of the house is spectacularly renovated and has a lot of exposed beam work. <strong>I'll take you inside another time.</strong></p>
<p>Let's start walking around the house so that you can get a better look!</p>

<p>In the above photo you can see the driveway and the car port. Straight ahead is a massive fig tree that produces a lot of very tasty fruit. To the right you see the kiwi vines. Between those and another few that we have at the other end of the property we have more kiwis than our 4 families can even consume.</p>

<p>Here's the car port showing the kiwi vines. &nbsp;Their land goes up to the top of the mountain that you can start to see in the background.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Here's an Interesting Fact About Ticino, Switzerland</h2>
<p>Although property is quite expensive in Switzerland agricultural land and land zoned as forest is still very reasonable.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is the side of the house. There is a little cobblestone road that ends at the adjacent property which is just a field where someone keeps horses. Since it is zoned for agriculture you cannot build there.</p>

<p>Going up the cobblestone road you can see the vineyard on the right and the house in the distance. We stopped working the vineyard a few years ago and now let a local farmer take care of it. The Merlot grapes are sold to the co-operative and on a good year the vineyard produces a nice cash crop.</p>

<p>Here's another view of the vineyard. Of course it looks a lot nicer in the summer. I'll show you that another time!</p>
<h1>Another Interesting Fact about Ticino: "The Freedom to Roam"</h1>
<p>While my family has a lot of land which is made up of fields, vineyards and forest, in Switzerland the law states that it must remain accessible to the public as long as they don't overuse it. For that reason people walk through paths in the woods that we own. It is referred to as "The Freedom to Roam". We have never had a problem with this and it is certainly nice for the people in the area.</p>

<p>There are many paths like this on the property. Notice the individually placed stones that make up the "path". Lot's of work was done by someone but it's very nice! In the woods we take any dead trees and cut them into fencing posts, and of course, wood for heating. The chestnut tree in particular is very resistant to rot and perfect for construcion that is close to the ground.</p>

<p>In this picture you can see some of the 30 bee keeping boxes that are on the property. They are not ours, my in-laws have allowed a beekeeper to use the land for this purpose and in exchange he provides us with honey. <strong>Sweet Deal!</strong></p>

<p>In this picture I've walked part way up the mountain. The building that I circled is the border crossing and after that it's not Switzerland but Italy. I've lived here over 20 years and crossed the different borders hundreds of times and have only been asked for documents once!</p>
<h1><strong>How Did You Enjoy The Tour?</strong></h1>
<p>This was just a short walk today perhaps another time you'll visit again and I'll show you the vegetable garden and the fruit trees. Of course it would be interesting to see what's inside that old renovated farm house!</p>

Wow, what a beautiful place to live, so roomy and lots of nature!
Your in-law's place looks amazing from the outside. After this, I'm so curious to see the inside! (*I'm too curious for my own good sometimes*)

I never really thought about your ponderings. I'm an observer, so whenever I meet new people, I am very quiet and shy, but I observe a lot. That way I get to know what they're like pretty quickly. I guess, seeing them in their own environment would help with understanding how they came to be that way, though. It would add a new layer of understanding.

I used to get some delicious honey from western Michigan where they have a lot of apple and cherry trees. Now the output is almost nil. I have a friend that is a collector, he has honey from around the world (Ireland had the worst, it looked and tasted like tar) and he says in another 10 years we'll be lucky to get any.

I really love the house and the property (the bit I could see through your camera lens). I also never knew a kiwi grew on a vine, I always thought it grew on a tree. By the way Merlot is my wife's favorite red wine.

Thank you for sharing this-- very interesting to see. I have fond memories of Switzerland from childhood; we used to go there regularly when I was little, back when my family still lived in Denmark.

This past week, I was asked by a friend what I thought about her new flame and her decision to meet with him. I had to underline to her how important and even critical at this point in time for her to go visit him at his place. If possible, to do so out of the blue and stay with him there for a while to get a sense of who he is and more importantly how he lives. I strongly believe that being in someone environment tell and awful lot about who they are and, to some extent, what kind of person they are too...

When I lived in wide spaces, big "homes", I usually had lots of people coming through most of the time while when I lived in much smaller places I had much less people visiting. As long as I have a sacred space in which to devote my soul to spirit, a place that has the potential of staying sacred, I make it so. A smaller place like the one I live in right now, doesn't easily allow for much visiting, so I am extremely careful as to who comes into the house.

Wow, those are some beautiful surroundings!  That is so cool that you can see Italy from your property!

I can't believe the Freedom to Roam law you have there.  People in the US are much more territorial and do not permit trespassing.  I wouldn't want people sneaking around our acreage.  I guess that's how we are raised here.

I do believe our living space is a good representation of who we are.  Everyone's home has its unique atmosphere.  Our home is an exception.  It is not an accurate representation of who we are because it is in a perpetual state of renovation and disarray!

The fig is big, alright. And I can see that those kiwi vines are substantial. I've been thinking about planting some, but I need to create some infrastructure for them to grow on -- and not some lightweight trellis, either, I think! Is that netting on the grapes, to protect their fruit? It's nice you are able to have other folsk do the work and your in-laws get some share, for the grapes and the honey. I had bees for awhile and am still living on my large supplies. They are busy creatures and productive! 

So interesting about your roaming laws. People here are getting more protective of access to their property, not less! It would be cool to just strike across the landscape, without care of property ownership! 

At least here in Oregon, we have a lot of public land, including 98% of our coastline along the Pacific Ocean. And we have state-wide zoning, too, to keep farm and forest land whole, and cities within strict boundaries.

Thanks for the comment. The netting on the grapes is mostly protection against hail but also against the birds. When we took care of the grapes we never put netting up and it cost us dearly a few times.

The roaming laws here seem to work well and it adds a lot to life. Yesterday when I took the photos I did see a beer can that was thrown down but for now that is rare.

Oregon must be great and if I was living in the USA I think that that would be a good place for me.

Oregon is wonderful. But a lot of places are, too! Your area seems pretty nice, too! Maybe I need netting on my grapes -- I fight the birds at some times of the year. I've got some tips and tricks, and plenty of grapes. I will probably go to netting on other crops, too. We've got some new invasive insects that are brutal on fruit -- the Spotted-Wing Drosophila is changing everything for cherries!   :(
