questions about up-voting etiquette?

I'm not too sure how to word this or ask for insight without coming across like an a-hole, I mean it with the best of intentions, I really do. I'm fairly new to Steemit and something I'm not sure I understand fully. When I see a post with content that I like that causes me to follow a user, I up-vote such post at the very least. Right?!? sounds like proper etiquette ?maybe I'm just confused as to how Steemit works?

For example, I wrote a post and gained 10 followers, received 5 upvotes, all but 1 were from existing followers. In other words, 1 up-vote out of 10 new followers. A post is worthy enough to cause one to follow but not worth an up-vote? Shouldn't it be the other way around? I suppose not all my stuff is gold, I get that part, I also understand, as we follow more and more users, it gets hard to keep track of all of their posts and with a limited number of votes, it's bound to be delegated all around so multiple users can benefit. This is not about existing followers, just new ones. I just have trouble understanding because it seems to happen over and over again and it's pretty discouraging. If my post isn't worthy of an up-vote, why follow? Is it a "I'll only follow you so you follow me back" type of thing? Frankly I feel a little hurt by that. Am I out of line for feeling this way? Somebody please enlighten me!!! Maybe I'm just taking it the wrong way?

I would like to know your thoughts on the above questions. I would also like to know, does it happen to you as well? If so, how does it make you feel? If you see a post that will cause you to follow a user, Is it worthy of an up-vote?

I still appreciate all of my followers, don't get me wrong. I'm just wondering how I should view the situation.

I think many follow just to look for others to reciprocate and they un-follow after some time. I normally upvote a post if i like it, but i seldom follow others.

thanks, for your insight, I also upvote more than I follow. I don't follow users just to get followers, I think that sort of behavior is cheap and brings no value to the platform.

I think it's because people are afraid to vote too much
people hear advice like don't vote more than ten times a day

I vote fifty or sixty or whatever, but of course, my vote means shit
So they follow you and they are going to vote your amazeballs post that just blows them away.
