<h3>&nbsp;We live in an era where technology has taken prominence and has been incorporated in various places including learning institutions. It has impacted differently depending on its area of application as some benefit from technology while it becomes a nightmare in other situations. For example, you are used to sitting for an exam, and the paper is later handed to the lecturer who gives the grade according to an individual's performance.&nbsp;</h3>

<h3>Sometimes it usually takes longer to get your results as the entire papers have to be graded by few lecturers. A new form of technology is later introduced which guarantees speed and reduces the burden most lecturers have. It works by submitting your paper to the programmed software which gives instant grades. It might have a positive impact on the side of the teacher but may not have a fair result to the student.&nbsp;</h3>

<h3>The reason is that software runs on a program which has been designed to follow specific rules or commands outlined by the software engineer. It gives output depending on the input which means that it will grade according to the commands that were used in its programming. It will not be able to mark your paper considerately because a lecturer can determine the idea which a student is trying to explain in the essay. The software will scan its options, and if it does not find anything related to your answers, it gives a negative grade. It also restricts a student to providing the right answers according to the exact phrases it may use in grading. &nbsp;</h3>

<h3>Think of a situation where the software cannot understand any phrase or sentence on your paper. On the other side, the lecturer reads the same statement and can comprehend what you have written the only difference being that you have expressed it in different words but still gives the same idea. You may end up failing a test which was simple and would give you higher grades compared to the software program. It also demotivates the students as you are always worried about your grades. However much you work hard or give right answers with a different explanation, you end up having lower grades.&nbsp;</h3>

<h3>Most people have argued that the technology used in learning institutions is preferable and that it enhances the speed of grading several students. It may be true, but the impact it lays on students makes it unsuitable when used as a grading system. A lecturer can always understand the idea presented on your answer and will grade you depending on your efforts in giving the right answer. The software makes no adjustments and grades your paper depending on the options it has on its program.&nbsp;</h3>

<h3>The fact that you receive your graded essay over a short period does not give you any motivation to view your grades. All it does is to set you in panic, and you will always be tensed about the final results. The final verdict is that a computer will not be a motivating factor towards determining the efforts you make towards achieving success. An essay which is handed to the lecturer gives a clear picture of a student's overall progress and final results. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</h3>

Sometimes it seems like that is all that the lecturers do anyways :) 

I think it will work ok for some tests but not for all, especially where you need subjective answers. I did a programming test on Coursera and it did just as you outlined. It actually worked really well because there was only one right answer for each question. the programme worked or it didnt.

I read some interesting stuff about the way bias plays a role in essay grading in Robert Cialdini's excellent book

I could relate to what he said about bias from my own days of grading papers. I used to read and grade the first 5 papers and then re-read them at the end to recalibrate. His suggestion was to blind grade the first 5 - i.e., not write the score on the paper so that the first score did not bias the 2nd score. 

There is no doubt that new neural network based technologies are evolving to do a more consistent job (and at lower cost). They can even read handwriting - which was the bane of my grading life.  How to win the war of neural net written stuff is still to be solved - oral examination will be making a come back.
