O running stream of sparkling joy

To be a soaring human boy!

Chapter 9

Evelyn softly shut the front door and hung her fur coat within the incommodious hall closet. “Ugh! This is so small and…Betsie!”

“I’m in here! What’s the matter?” Her voice ejaculated from the far-removed sitting room.

Evelyn exchanged her outdoor shoes for her slippers and padded down the hallway. Her fists were balled by her side, her lips pursed.

Betsie, reading a novel, was lounging upon the divan, her feet resting upon a cushion. She shifted the open book to the side of her face. “What’s wrong?”

        “Every…oh never mind! Nothing.”

“Really, tell me. It seems as if you’re about to explode.”

Only then did Evelyn realize the aching tension permeating her upper body. She concentrated on relaxing each flexed muscle and pasted an angelic smile upon her face. “Really, it’s nothing.”

“You’re good, but not that good.”

I’m too proud to batter myself in front of others, even Betsie. I’m already having a hard time admitting to myself I’ve failed to find Carl up until now.

“Should you not be studying some medical textbook?” Evelyn said with a smirk.

“Bah, we all need a little enjoyment once in a while in our busy lives.” She laid the book down upon the coffee table in front of her, drew her legs into a proper sitting position, and patted the spot next to her. “Come, sit down.”

Evelyn chilled, snuggled beside her friend, dropping her head onto Betsie’s broad shoulders.

“May I ask who was your last patient?”

“His name is Clyde Smith. Doctor MacCrae unexpectedly came to me today while I was working and asked me if I would be willing to give this young boy some motherly attention.”

“Really? Doesn’t this boy have a family? And how is Doctor MacCrae involved with all of this?”

Evelyn’s brows knit in frustration. “You know, I don’t know much about the whole situation at all. I know he’s an orphan; his parents were killed in the explosion. It seems to be Doctor MacCrae is somehow taking care of him. Perhaps next time I see the doctor I could inquire as to what living arrangements have been made for Clyde.”

“Didn’t you see Doctor MacCrae tonight?”

“I did. He’s the one who showed me the way to Clyde. However, our meeting was…a short one.”

“Well, Clyde is lucky to have someone like you looking after him.”

“Yes, there’s just something I don’t understand. He’s lost both his parents in the explosion, but…the sun…his face shines like the sun. He’s oddly accepted the fact his parents are no longer with him. He believes one day he’ll see them again. How can that be?”

“Sometimes a child-like faith is all one needs to be set free from the harsh reality confronting us daily. It truly is beautiful. But one day, he’ll grow up, and circumstances will most probably change his rosy view. He’ll realize hope is almost too good to be true. I think most of us realize this one day. Poor child.”

If hope was almost non-existent, then what was the point of living? There must be something more to strive for, to gain.

“Betsie, what makes you think there is no hope?”

“I…something happened. When I was a young girl, my mother bore a baby boy. He was the sweetest thing I had ever seen in my life. His little hands and feet, his smile always gave me butterflies—I looked forward to waking up every morning to see him. At eight years old, he contracted the polio. My parents and I were devastated. My father told me to pray, to ask God to heal him. Believe me, I prayed every morning and night. If I could have willed him to be healed, I would have. But, he had polio until the day he died. My heart broke, and my hope…it faded away. I haven’t seen it since.”

“I’m so sorry.” Evelyn placed her hand upon Betsie’s hunched shoulder.

“Well, I think I’ll go to bed.”

        “Goodnight, Betsie.”

        “Goodnight.”

***

The next day at the hospital, Evelyn worked hard to finish her work as soon as she could. She was eager to see Clyde again. Something about him intrigued her. Perhaps it was his unwavering assurance of his eternal fate and the fates of those he loved. Or maybe it was his childish innocence that was the balm to her aching heart. He was the ray of sun when the day was done.

Evelyn dropped by Doctor MacCrae’s office to thank him for the suggestion he had made concerning Clyde. She slowly poked her head around the frame of the slightly open door. No one was inside.

He must have forgotten to close his door all the way.

She cautiously ambled inside and shut the door behind her. She walked toward the microscope and fingered it, admiring its marvellous beauty. She drank in the bookish smells of the leather-bound medical textbooks all sitting in perfect order upon a pine shelf. Since Doctor MacCrae was not in his office at the moment, she decided to write a brief note upon a piece of blank paper sitting upon the top left-hand corner of his desk.

Dear Doctor MacCrae,

Thank you for re-introducing Clyde to me. He is a most enigmatic young boy. But his winning smile is easy to love. He’s lucky to have someone like you watching over him.

                                                          Sincerely,

                                                                       Evelyn Richardson

Satisfied, she folded the paper and laid it upon the centre of the desk. As she opened the door to leave, Doctor MacCrae entered. The force with which he had entered made Evelyn careen into a corner of a small square table behind the door showcasing a pot of fresh flowers.

        “Oh.”

The corner of the table jabbed her in the stomach. The pain was throbbing.

“Evel…Mrs. Richardson, are you all right?”

She offered the most convincing smile she could. “I think so. This seems to be quite a habit, isn’t?”

He looked at her, eyes glazed over. He exhaled deeply while combing back his hair with his hand. “I’m so sorry. Please forgive me. I would appreciate it if I could have some time to myself.”

“Of course. I’ll leave you.” She swiftly closed the door behind her. Resting her back against the door, her chest heaved up and down a few times until she could catch her breath. She glanced to her left then to her right a couple of times, apprehending any nearby footstep. She curled back a wisp of her hair. Why did she feel so guilty? She had gone into his study without permission to…? Shaking her head to clear it, she righted herself and steered herself in the direction of Clyde’s room. The door creaked open.

“You’re back!” Clyde put down his book.

“Yes, you didn’t think I would forget, did you?”

        “No. I knew you wouldn’t.”

“And what made you certain of my character and intentions?” A playful smirk emerged from her usual serious countenance.

“I’m not sure…That’s a good question. Maybe because I lost my parents and you lost your husband—maybe you don’t feel so lonely anymore when you come visit me. I know I don’t feel lonely.”

“You’re right. I don’t feel lonely. May I come sit with you?”

        “Yes, please.”

She sat down beside him, adjusting her skirts. “What book were you reading?”

        “I was reading Robinson Crusoe.”

“That was one of my childhood favourites.”

“You really were a non-typical girl! I like you!”

“I like you, too. I was wondering, how did you meet Doctor MacCrae? I mean other than your being his patient.”

        “I was never his patient.”

        “Really?”

“Yes, actually, it was by Providence he found me.”

        “How so?”

“Well, after having been on a bed for so long, the nurses said I could finally walk around the halls a little bit. I met Doctor MacCrae after I met Mr. Cox. I asked the nurse if I could be left alone just for a few minutes to pray. At first, she didn’t want to let me out of her sight. I finally convinced her I would only be around the corner. When I found an empty chair in a more solitary corridor, I saw Doctor MacCrae sitting on a nearby chair. As soon as he saw me, he stuffed a piece of paper in his coat pocket and looked scared.

        “How strange!”

“Maybe he wanted to be left alone, too. Well, I sat down next to him. He started talking to me. He asked me who my parents were and how I got hurt. He felt sorry for me. After I told him both my parents died and I didn’t have any other living relatives, he said I could stay here at the hospital during the day while he worked and go back home with him at night. He said it would be our little secret. But now you know the secret, too.”

“Yes, I guess I do.” Evelyn mulled the matter over. “No one else knows your…situation?”

“I don’t think so. I have a lot of fun sneaking in.”

“Before the explosion happened, did you enjoy going to school?”

“I couldn’t always go to school because sometimes I was busy helping my father run our farm. I love school. I miss learning.”

“Which subject do you miss the most?”

“I miss arithmetic. I enjoy numbers a lot.”

Evelyn reminisced upon how much she had enjoyed learning when she was in school. Now Clyde, an orphan in hiding, could not go to school with other schoolmates. He had no family. If he were to be discovered by the committee in charge of finding homes for orphaned children that was set up after the explosion, she might never see him again.

“Clyde, how would you like it if when I came to visit you that I would continue to teach you your numbers and perhaps whatever other knowledge I have on other subjects? I can bring some paper and writing tools.”

“Really?” Clyde’s visage beamed. His eyes twinkled as his mouth grew wide, ready to crack.

Evelyn bobbed her head up and down enthusiastically.

        “Oh, yes, please.”

“Well, then we shall commence the next time I visit you. I might not be able to see you for the next few days because…I’ll be occupied searching for my husband. Do you think you can wait?”

        “Oh, yes, I can.”

“Good,” she kissed the top of his brow. “Now, I must be getting back again.”

        “All right.”

        “Goodbye.”

        “Goodbye, Evelyn.”

She turned to leave then stopped in her tracks. “How often does Doctor MacCrae come to visit you?”

“Not often, but he never forgets me.”

“No, I don’t think anyone ever could.”

His smile, stamped upon her mind, brought the warmth of day back into her chilled heart.

She bid adieu to those on the night shift whom she passed on her way out the door. At her locker, she removed her shoes to replace them with some fuzzy, warm boots.

The crunch of the snow was her only companion all the way back home. The dark did not intimidate her, neither the shadows lurking about. All she could think about was that she was alone. There was no hand slipped into hers squeezing in the comfort of another soul. Yet as she walked, her fingers lingered slightly apart, imagining and wishing for that hand.

I can't believe I have missed this before. This is such an excellent post. The formatting was done really well, and it's highly readable. Dialogue was expertly written, and the pacing was fantastic. The story really flows well, and it really captures the reader's attention. I'll carve out time to read the previous chapters, as this story definitely deserves recognition. Interested to see how the story pans out. Great work all around!
