Protecting the Muslim identity in the modern world.

Theodore Herzl, before founding the zionist movement, was a 'jewish integrationist'. He believed the jewish people should 'westernise' and 'euorpoenise', rejecting their jewish roots, and becoming no different from their non jewish counterparts. He believed this until he was in France during a wave of antisemitic riots and protests, and, as he looked upon the antisemitic masses, he realised that the jewish people could never be safe without their own state, he realised that integration was not the answer. It was a non rational, ineffable realisation, it was a moment of enlightenment for Herzl. After this he made the founding of a jewish state a central goal of his life, considering a number of geographical locations, and places, from Uganda to Palestine.

I believe a great number of Muslims have become accustomed to think like the younger Herzl, when, in reality, they should be thinking like the older Herzl, the zionist Herzl. I don't believe that many of the muslim community are as extreme in their desires for westernisation as the younger Herzl. Most do not yet want to reject their religious and cultural heritage completely, but there does seem to be a strange distain amongst muslims for their heritage, and an unquestioning support for modern western liberal thought. They feel the need to justify their religious history via modern western standards, they seem intent on painting their own cultures and countries as barbarous in comparison to the west, and seem intent on becoming the same as their non muslim brothers and sisters, as if muslims are not fundamentally different. This seems to be the case for liberal, atheist, and secular muslims as well as for religious, theistic, and fundamentalist muslims. This inferiority complex needs to stop.

What is needed is radical pan islamic Muslim nationalism. By that I do not mean theocracy, at least not in the way preached by the modern islamist. If we look to the most recent, most effective pan-islamic muslim nationalist movement, we can't not look at the Pakistan movement. The Pakistan movement incorporated everyone from alcohol drinking, bacon eating, Ataturk supporters to deeply religious muslim philosophers, all with the aim of rejecting western and Indian oppression against muslims. Muhammad Iqbal's hope for Pakistan was not one of modern nationalism, but one of muslim unity, it was neither a south asian project, nor a particularly religious project, it went beyond that, it was truly radical. The modern islamist movements are not radical, slaughtering the infidel, and the apostate is not radical, accepting the apostate atheist, the lesbian, and the balsphemer as a muslim is truly radical, and is the only way in which muslims can protect their identity, and people.
