The colours of black and white were adopted by the New Zealand
troops in the South African War, 1899 - 1902,
used in the New Zealand Defense Medal, 1939 - 45.
the New Zealand Service Medal 1946 - 49,
and the East Timor Medals.
Instituted in 2002 for operational service since 3 September 1945.
[one day after the surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay, and one day
after the qualifying service for Second World War Medals ended.]
It is awarded once irrespective of the number of times the individual
may have been deployed on operations.
This is the first campaign medal to be worn after any WW2 medals,
The New Zealand Service Medal 1946 - 1949

Instituted in 1995 to recognize service in Japan between
March 1946 and March 1949.
In 2002 the Royal Warrant was extended to recognize service
between September 1945 and March 1946.
This included service by the crews of HMNZS Gambia and
HMNZS Achilles in Japanese waters.
The Korea Medal

Instituted in 1951 to recognize service in the Korean War.
Awarded to British Commonwealth Forces who took part
in the War between 2 July 1950 and 27 Jul 1953.

The ribbon is United Nations blue with white stripes.
The basic colours of the United Nations.
Awarded for service during the Korean War 1 Jul 1950
to 27 Jul 1953, and for service in the first twelve months
following the Armistice, [up to 27 July 1954].
It was manufactured in the language of each country that
participated in the United Nations Force in Korea.
Worn after the Korea Medal if both Medals have been awarded.

Instituted in 1951 to recognize the service of the Military
Observers supervising the truce in the Middle-East, following
the cease-fire in the Arab- Israeli War.
Since then the UNTSO has been involved in peacekeeping
and monitoring duties In the region, including observation
of the cease-fire in the
Suez Canal area and the Golan Heights following the
June 1967 Arab - Israeli War

The ribbon has a wide central band in various shade of green
representing the Himalayan Range and the Kashmir Valley.
The white stripes flanking the green represent the snow-capped
Mountains,
The outer blue edge is a band of United Nations blue.
The United Nations Military Observer Group In India and Pakistan
was formed in 1949 to propose terms for a truce between the two countries.
Awarded for six months service in the area.
Also awarded for six months service between 1965 and 1966.

Because of its relatively long history, this medal carries the effigy
