If someone wants to reward a good author, doesn't it follow that they would want to read everything they write?

For now, don't be discourage, just keep posting and you will see that there is a whole to learning regarding rewards and steemit blog posts. In reality, with everything currently in place, steemit has a way of working out valuable posts. The magic for now is, keep posting, build your reputation and follower-base and see what happens next. Too, when rewards are back to normal rewards will be better. There are facets to steemit beyond blogging and many too.
