My Child's Reaction to Traveling Missionaries

# This happened a few years ago, when my daughter, Nebula, was about eight years old. #

Three Jehovah's Witnesses showed up in the driveway of our rural home. We are not religious and we do not like being proselytized to. We've never had visitors of the evangelical variety, either before or since. 

Nebula was in the room, half listening while she played Minecraft, so I was careful not to say anything un-graceful or trollish to the poor guys. I didn't do to them what I had once done to a couple of other door-to-door missionaries--asking them if they'd like to come in and talk about Our Lord Satan. I simply listened to their spiel but kept an "I am totally disinterested" expression on my face. They spoke for a couple minutes, shoved some pamphlets into my hand, and were back in their car, driving away to the next unsuspecting neighbor. 

I closed the door and Nebula asked, "Who were they?"

"Jehovah's Witnesses," I said.

"What did they want?"

"They wanted to convert us to their religion," I said. "Look, they left us some propaganda." I handed her the pamphlets they'd given me.

"What is their religion?" she asked, thumbing through the papers. "Going to strangers' houses and giving out pamphlets?"

"Yes. Pretty much. That and they can't get blood transfusions or celebrate holidays."

"O-kaaaaay. I'm just gonna throw this away then."

"Are you sure? You can read them if you want. Maybe you'll decide to become a Jehovah's Witness."

"No, that's okay. I've already got a religion."

"Oh yeah? What's that?"

"It's called Non-pamphletism."

Great sense of humor in that kid. 

Points for giving her the freedom to decide for herself. But she did well to steer away from this cult. I have two friends whose mothers "answered the door," and it led to years of rape and sexual abuse at the hands of cult members.  Speak out against a senior member of the cult and you lose everything: job, family, identity, community. So these abuses can go on for years.

One of my friends was featured in a Dateline expose. Because she had the courage to speak out, her abuser is serving the first multiple-life sentence for sexual assault ever handed down in this country (she was only one of his many victims). And despite all the evidence against her attacker, the church still came down on his side *after the verdict* and spoke out in support of him!
