Adventures of An American Chef on the Run: Natural Home Made, Hand Shelled Peanut Butter with Organic Honey

<p>I tried something new today, something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. &nbsp;I grew up eating peanut butter on a nearly daily basis, so this past year with my 3 small jars of peanut butter has been tough to say the least. &nbsp;I love the flavor, the texture and versatility. &nbsp;One of my favorite types of cookies is peanut butter cookies, something I’ve not had in too long. &nbsp;I bought this kilo of peanuts a few weeks back at my last visit to the central market, and I’ve finally got around to making some peanut butter.<br>

<p>This is what 2.25 pounds of in-shell peanuts look like. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Abnormally shaped sized and dirty proves their natural origin. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>I shelled the whole bag, filling up the bowl you see here. &nbsp;I didn’t weigh how much I got in terms of nuts but it was more than I expected. &nbsp;It was honestly enough to make doing this sort of thing on a regular basis feasable. I like feasable.<br>

<p>The shells will go to compost, a great woody addition to the pile. There were actually four bowls this size total, I was just emptying them into the compost bag when they got too full.<br>

<p>I chose the blender, my cheap little 300 peso solution. &nbsp;Just dump them in and start to pulverize. &nbsp;Many of the recipes I found online told me I wouldn’t need oil. &nbsp;I found I actually needed quite a bit, so I used avocado oil which worked great. &nbsp;I also added a bit of honey for sweetness and I’m glad I did. &nbsp;&nbsp;<br>

<p>Blending in pulses and using spoons to mix around, work it until you get a paste, adding oil if it appears to dry by the tablespoon. &nbsp;&nbsp;<br>

<p>Consistency is up to you, I gave up at a butter the texture of grainy mustard, which was actually pleasant. &nbsp;Only a small amount is needed to fully flavor the sandwich, making it so it’ll go a long way. &nbsp;I’m considering a cookie recipe, as I am aware this product is MUCH drier than what most recipes will call for.<br>

<p>All in all, it’s been a first good experience. &nbsp;I think every peanut butter lover should humble themselves with the task of shelling and making their own nut butter, as a lot of labor goes into it. &nbsp;I was shelling those peanuts for probably over an hour for the small amount I got, but that small amount is mighty rewarding. &nbsp;I see it lasting me a few weeks, in which time I can venture to the market to get another bag. &nbsp;At less than a dollar a kilo, this is the cheapest, healthiest option for peanut butter I think I’ve ever heard of. &nbsp;Here for the same amount it’s easily 50 pesos, just because it’s not that popular of a product. &nbsp;I see other nut butters in my future, so watch out Steemit.<br>
