I was given this little gift today, a little love and light for the solstice, the turning day. The astronomical moment itself is 16:28 UTC today - which, given the speed at which I write, will probably be around the time I hit "Post". But I can never remember exactly what that moment is, just that from now on the sun will be higher in the sky and soon the days will begin to feel longer.

For those of you in the southern hemisphere, today has a different meaning, but here in the north we can soon celebrate the return of the light.

The longer I live, the more I see how little the objective world contributes to reality. There are feelings in me that I understand to be very old, much older than you or me. They can't be measured, analysed, or reproduced under laboratory conditions. Regardless of the electric light in which I could live 24 hours a day or my home's central heating system, the movement of the seasons and the sun in the sky triggers stuff in me that my rational mind takes a while to process. Now is the time to be still and reflect, to huddle together to keep warm and trust in the rebirth of the light.

The feeling of being out of the city more this year means I've been more aware than ever of the process of the sun seeming to leave and then returning in a daily and annual cycles, the moon waxing and waning every 28 days or so. Everything comes and goes and then comes back.

I was thinking about my compost bin last night. It's about six months since we got here and started collecting our garden and kitchen plant waste. I'm so looking forward to the spring and seeing what all that has rotted into, but for now it's just sitting there, transforming, quietly, in the dark, helped by tiny beasts and bacteria, life changing form.

Whether today represents the midpoint or the start/end of your solar year, I wish you love and warmth and light.

I appreciated this.  As an improviser who practices harnessing the power of the emotions: happy, sad, angry, afraid, i can relate to the fact that we can not explain how we feel, we just do.  I believe it is what makes us human, something to be thankful for.
