Today I walked *up* the hill instead of down towards the river.  It's quite a maze of windy little roads up there, with few signposts and lots of PRIVATE! admonitions to keep the commoners like me out.  I don't care, I just follow the map.  Except when I don't - I got lost a couple of times and had to double back on myself.

And at times, it got really really steep.  My legs, lungs and heart certainly got their exercise today!

But worth it.  At the top in Beech Lane you get your first real glimpse of the town centre across the cemetery (where [Lewis Carroll](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Carroll#LaterYears) is buried, that's a walk and a post for another day).

More obvious is the huge, gothic [Bookers Tower](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Booker%27s_Tower) commissioned in the mid 19th Century by a mayor of Guildford whose sons had died.

Walking further, it's one of those places where just when you think you've got to the top of the hill, you realise there's a little bit more to go.  So up I went and over the top, but it was worth it, for the view towards the north over the Farnham Road and Stag Hill with the University and Cathedral at the top of it.  Seventies horror film buffs will recognise the iconic building that Damien has a screaming fit at when he's taken there in The Omen.
