Bigger Phones - Thoughts on Galaxy Note 20

I thought today would be a great time to talk about my last couple of handsets I’ve had the pleasure of using. As a heavy phone user, performance and battery life are things I appreciate. Earlier in the year I snapped up a Galaxy S20 Ultra straight from Korea. It doesn’t come cheap but it delivered an adequate experience that I expect Samsung to deliver, especially for the bigger bucks. A few months later, I would have the chance to test drive the Galaxy Note 20. I’ve not used a Note since the Galaxy Note 3 and during that time, I found the stylus and “Note window” to be cool feature. The modern Note is a different beast entirely today and it was time to revisit the bigger iteration of the current generation’s Galaxy handsets.

After using the Galaxy S20 Ultra, I wasn’t expecting a huge difference in experience when jumping to the Note. The extra screen real estate was nice and the finish felt polished, something to be expected with the premium tag attached from this range. Even with the extra screen space, the 5000mAh battery holds up throughout the day. Extra screen space is highly appreciated with sacrificing too much usage time as it is intended to be a driver for daily tasks and productivity. Samsung screens have always been beautifully crafted too, paired with a wonderful refresh rate, the phone feels buttery smooth.

Holding the Galaxy Note 20 isn’t awkward, it is certainly bigger but this isn’t something that worried me. It’s not significantly bigger than the Galaxy Ultra 20. The current trend of mainline phones getting bigger and bigger has become the norm and the concept of the note isn’t alien to users anymore. I see it as a normal size on the higher end. Camera specs remain the same but the focus issue has been dealt with by the implementation of laser focus. It wasn’t a huge issue for me on the Galaxy Ultra but I am happy to see Samsung addressed its issues with the Note. However, the night mode on the Note 20 is beastly. My night shots have been beautiful.

With the same chips inside, performance has been the same and jumping to the Note has been a seamless transition. I’ve appreciated the S-Pen too. It’s vastly superior to my time with it many years ago. The price might be high and the Exynos version may be vastly inferior but the SnapDragon version is a worthy handset.
