Plein Air Painting at Cachuma Lake, Santa Barbara, California
Recently my wife and I went on a camping trip for our 4 year anniversary at Cachuma Lake in Santa Barbara California.  It was really nice and relaxing and I brought my French easel and some oils and did some plein air of the view from our campsite. This is just such a relaxing and awesome way to study.

I used some burnt Umber to lay out the basic shapes of the landscape as I observed it.

I work from the back to the front (Background to foreground). So I started with the sky, then the farthest mountains and so on.

The finished plein air painting. I was really focusing on color and form. You don't have a lot of time with these sorts of studies so they are fantastic in getting the gist of the scene and the lighting. I can't wait to take my easel and paints out hiking and doing more of these.
