I can still remember how cold it was as the rain falls and the cold wind went brushing through our cheeks while we're preparing our puppets. It was our School Language Art Show and it was our first time joining a puppetry competition. I made the script and put a lot of efforts while making the puppets, though the puppets really looked ugly cause we really have no idea on how to make a puppet. T^T
Then, since it's already the day of the competition, we have no choice but to do our best. We arrived at the venue surprisingly a little bit early than the rest. I was sitting beside my bestfriend Roxanne, Kate and Kaye when the other competitors arrived with their stand and puppets. Our jaws literally dropped after seeing their puppets and stands. Their all so beautiful and elegant, you can really see the efforts and moneys that they had provided just to make such marvelous puppets. And on the other hand, our puppets looked like one of those dolls on the scary movies. T^T
Since it was raining, we had trouble on assembling our puppet stand. It was really hard and a little bit embarrassing since our stand was placed at the center of the elegant puppet stands of the other competitors. Roxanne once said, *"Yup, we're done for. There's no way we're winning this thing."* *"Yeah I agree, just look at them, and look at ours."* Kaye added. *"Duhhh, at least we made it this far. We're gorgeous, they're ugly that's what matters."* The three of us looked at Kate who's annoyingly stating something that isn't even related to the topic.
I sighed and said, *"Let's just do our best, I mean we can still do this. Let's not aim to win. Instead, let's enjoy the competition and make the most of it."* They seemed to be a little bit encouraged which is a good thing. I know they're all nervous, I can't play them since the tension is amazingly hot at the moment. The competition started and I on the other hand prayed that whatever happens, I wish everyone can perform their part without any mistakes. We were eight (8) competitors and we are the fourth performer.
It was our turn when the rain started to drop heavily making it hard for our voices to reach the audience. I have to play two puppets since I have roles. Throughout the play,I noticed that Kaye and Roxanne made a mistake, good thing they stayed on track and added some convos, they continued playing as if they did not commit any mistake. In the end, we performed successfully. We came down the stage and went to our coach. While our head is looking since we all know that we may performed it very well, but we still don;t stood a chance.
Our coach told us that we did our best, we gained a new experience and that's what matters. The four of us sighed and asked if we could watch the Jazz Band competition which is also held in spring resort. Roxanne said, *"Since we're already here, let's go and cheer our Jazz Band, it's no use staying here anyway."* The three of us agreed and went to the Resort's pool side to cheer the Jazz Band.
After a few minutes of cheering our Jazz Band, I received a call from our coach saying we won. LOL she's clearly lying. It's obvious that we won't win. But our coach didn't sounded like she's lying, she even said that if we wont be there for five minutes then she wont treat us with pizza. I immediately told Roxanne, Kaye and Kate then the four of us were running towards the venue.
Then we saw her. Our coach is holding a trophy. We were like, *"Seriously?!"* We rushed to see the trophy clearly and she was right. We won! We won the puppetry competition! It was beyond our expectation, really. Then I asked our coach why we won. I mean, we basically didn't have a good puppets and puppet stand.
Then our coach said, "The judges said our script was our winning piece. It basically edged over the rest scripts. You did a good job on making the script. I'm so proud of you, all of you"* after saying that, our coach hugged us all. It was... it was really wonderful. I mean, we didn't expect to win, we all thought we wont win but because of the script that I made, we won!
I can still remember how teary my eyes were back then. This is the very first time that together with my bestfriend, we won a certain competition and it's an unexpected victory. After that day, our school's head gave us a prize for winning. She didn't expect we'd won that's why she wasn't able to buy an ice cream for us beforehand. But that's actually okay, instead of ice cream, we used the money to buy pizza to eat it together. I swear I was really happy to the extent that it felt like I'm in cloud nine. A few days later, the four of us received a certificate and a medal. Damn it was a great privilege to win something for the school. And that's how we started practicing more getting ready to the Division Level which is going to be held at the Negros Oriental High School at Dumaguete City.
