Using PowerBI and SSMS to Create a Steemit Analysis
*A tutorial of how to connect  to  DBSteem and how to create a simple analysis*

I informed you guys in my last post where I [created a sandbox with SQL Server](https://steemit.com/utopian-io/@luvabi/steemit-bi-analysis-sandbox-creation-and-steemit-database-definition)  to be able to retrieve  data from the Steemit database.  That would be useful if you want to host a web application on your own  test server  or if you plan to install tools to help with your analysis. Excel works wonders on data you pull out from the database albeit tedious although getting it on SQL Server Management Studio(SSMS) is easy and fast. This was what i used to do before I saw in @paulag's post how she uses PowerBI.

I have zero PowerBI background but I think learning something new makes life much more  interesting and adventurous. In this case, adventurous while clicking away on your laptop.

I tried out PowerBI immediately and had fun creating graphs about the Analysis of delegation that was an ongoing challenge in August 2017. Power BI Analysis creation is made simple by the drag and drop feature.

#### Steps for easy install:
#
1. Once downloaded, run and install.

2. In the next dialog box, Accept the License Agreement.

3. Then accept default values for the next dialog box  and proceed to install.

#### Connect PowerBI to SQL Server Database

1. Click on  **Get Data** and select SQL Server

2.Enter SQL Connection details.

3.Select the table you want to get data from in this case it is the TxAccountCreates, click the check box.

4.Next click on the **Edit** button at the bottom right.
5.On the table, click on the arrow down button beside *creator*.

6.Then add a Filter on the column.

7.Data is now filtered according to the settings.

8.On upper right, click on **Close and Apply**.

9.From there, you can click on a visualization then drag and drop the fields that makes up the information you need.

*Here you can see that Precise created accounts for Filipino users in September, October and November. Starting November,  steemph account was used to create the accounts and delegate Steem Power to new users with the help of our in house witness - Precise. Since September, 36 accounts have been created with 11 counts so far (and counting) in December.*

When the data is larger, connecting PowerBI to DBSteem can be  quite slow and the columns do not load in the right hand side.

In this case,  I use SQL Server management Studio (SSMS) to connect to the DBSteem to get data related to a simple analysis - 
#
1.  Connect to DBSteem using info from http://www.steemsql.com/ created by @arcange.

2.Once connected, click on **New Query**.
#
3.Run a query  selecting columns that have the data you need. For a complete list of columns, [click here](https://steemit.com/steemph/@luvabi/bisteemit-sandbox-creation-and-steemit-database-definition).

4.Click on **Execute** button to execute the query.

5.Right click on the results (12154 rows returned!) and select **Save Results As...**

6.Type a file name for you csv file of results and click Enter.

7.Go back to your PowerBI window and click on **Get Data**. Select the CSV file that you saved.

8.Click on Load Data in the next window.
#
9.Click on the visualization of your choosing and here I added filters on the data to display only values above 50 (more than 50 comments so far today).

Thanks for the feedback @crokkon. 

I changed it to tutorial since it is a guide on making an analysis for steemit. 
It's fine if not approved it will help others on making their own Steemit analyses in the future if they want to. I will read the guidelines better on the analysis creation because I plan to submit a more detailed one next.
