The Giant's Causeway

One simply does not pass the opportunity to visit a place such as the Giant’s Causeway. These rocks have been on my bucket list for a good while. The timing could not have been more perfect and such also was the weather. Well, of course except the part where I completely forgot to put on sunscreen on my face and got burned like a lobster. Always put on sunscreen! Or, take the example from Japanese ladies, who were walking around with parasols. But, hey! Rocks!

When visiting Northern Ireland, the Giant’s Causeway is mentioned as one of the tops must-see places. Where are all the people in these photos since the place is so popular? Peopleless photos in some particular spots were quite a challenge. There were hundreds of people visiting from all around the world. I heard so many languages that day.

What’s so special about these rocks? Let’s have a look!

As you look at these strange, mostly hexagonal shapes you can’t help, but wonder. How is this even possible? According to some science nerds, these shapes were created due to volcanic activity, where liquid basalt escaped the earth’s crust. Columns up to twelve meters high and polygonal shapes were formed during the cooling process of the lava. Around 60 million years ago, you probably wouldn’t want to be anywhere near this superheated, boiling, and violent place, but today it is pretty fascinating to imagine.

The Giant’s Gate

There is another theory other than the one the science nerds have about how this place came to be and it involves some pretty angry giants. Irish one Finn MacCool and Benandonner from Scotland.

Finn wasn’t much of a swimmer so he decided to throw some rocks in the ocean and make a bridge for crossing. So there he went with all his giantess to fight the Benandonner, but it didn’t go so well as he saw Benandonner was more giant giant than himself. Finn ran back home to his wife and they came up with a plan for Finn to pretend to be her baby.

I imagine their exchange was something along the lines of this:

“He is so much bigger than me! What are we going to do?” he cried out loudly.

“Come on, Finn! Don’t be such a baby! Wait...That’s brilliant! Be a baby, Finn!”

When Benandonner saw the giant “baby”, he got scared. If that was the baby, what size the father would be like? He ran back to Scotland destroying the causeway behind him so that no one could cross again.

Moral of the story, if you ever get in trouble with a giant, just pretend to be a baby. No, not really. Also, giant’s are weird and obsessed with their size. Really. This story made me giggle about the nature of giants like a lot. Once again folklore and stories stem from things people back in the old days couldn’t explain or understand how it could have happened, or formed in this case. Sort of a coping mechanism, perhaps?

That’s Finn’s boot. Probably fell off when he ran back home to his wife all scared, ahaha!

Apart from strange, volcanic rocks and stunning cliffs, there was one more beautiful thing I got to witness with my own eyes for the first time. The Atlantic Ocean! I was mesmerized by its vastness and presence. I felt deep respect mixed with a tiny hint of fear and excitement of unstoppable nature forces, and the unknown lurking underneath the seemingly peaceful, deep blue surface. I love it even though it freaks me out at the same time!

I love the photos. The rough looking landscape with all the rocks all around is very pleasant for my eye. What kind of lenses you used? The close-up photos were nice too, having a very soft looking bokeh.

Thank you @apsu! I walked for hours along the coast and it was all rocks and cliffs there. They have trails both by the ocean and up at the cliffs. Was pretty amazing! I didn't want to leave.

Oh the lens is nothing impressive, but it has served me well and I love it. It came with the kit. AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G

That's cool, it's really clear the photos aren't looking good because of the lens you have but because you're using it well :)

These Rock pictures are amazing. Shape really does intrigue the mind. Magnificent shots that make one ponder about how mysterious nature can be in it’s shapes and forms truly.

Btw. Simple Man is probably my favorite guitar riff and the song makes me get tears every time i hear it.

Thank you so much @yangyanje! ^^ It was very impressive and I did not expect the territory to be so huge. I was there almost entire day crawling on the rocks and walking the trails at the cliffs and even though by the Causeway itself it was a bit crowded with people, there were some very peaceful spots to ponder about how it all came to be. Ah and the view of the ocean! It felt like a dream.

I love that song. I think I heard it a lot as a kid and it somehow calms me down.

Ahaha! Me too and at the same time I didn't know that the giants were such cowards and tricked each other xD but then again it is not the first time I come across the folklore or tales that describe them as not very smart creatures despite their size.

Cool to see the different look to the basalt. In Wyoming there is Devil's Tower which is a basalt tower of squared edge pillars but the rock looks quite different. Here in Spokane WA there is a bunch of red basalt pillars.

Looks like an amazing place to visit.

Wow, I looked up the Devil's Tower, so cool how it is all concentrated in one spot and really looks like a strange tower. Earth is pretty amazing, isn't it? I would love to wander every corner of it and explore every bit. One can dream?

It really is! I was so lucky to have this opportunity right before heading back home to Latvia :)

Thank you for reading and for support!

Very cool! I always get so excited with hiking / passing through places like these that I forget to slow down and soak in how cool the finer details are.

Rad geology -- can tell that it's been in this legendary battle with waves for eons. really like the composition and perspective in a lot of the images!

Thanks for sharing.

Oh wow, this place is _beautiful_! The volcanic rocks are _sooo_ cool, the way they formed like that. Natural beauty is really its own very special thing to which nothing else can really compare.

Really loved the origin story about how the giants created that place. It's fascinating what sorts of stories us little carbon specks come up with to explain things. Of course now we know how it _really_ happened, but... do we? Do you ever wonder if maybe we are still just coming up with some stories? Hehe.

I love all of these photos, as always it's just such a joy to look at everything you capture. I really dig all the rock pictures and especially the one of _The Giant's Organ_ is so cool, I love that angle.... also [this one](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://i.imgur.com/5BnvB7J.jpg) where we are looking down over a cliff or something, I am a little light-stomached looking at it.... is it as high as it looks? Were you scared at all?

>The Atlantic Ocean! I was mesmerized by its vastness and presence. I felt deep respect mixed with a tiny hint of fear and excitement of unstoppable nature forces, and the unknown lurking underneath the seemingly peaceful, deep blue surface. I love it even though it freaks me out at the same time!

Ah, the Ocean. An old _frenemy_ of mine. Did you say hello for me?

I have not seen it for a few years now. I remember the first time I saw it, in my early teens and feeling all sorts of emotions. Seeing it disappear over the horizon and realising I was not even seeing any meaningful part of it at all. Young and desperate, feeling absolutely powerless against that thing. Knowing I'd do anything to cross it. Even with how beautiful it was, I hated it then. But there was still some magic in my life then, so I could not help but to feel its power and make its acquaintance.

A few years ago we met again. I was older; that chapter of my life had closed years before, and I was no longer bitter. I appreciated its magnificent vastness and beauty, and I think I did try to sort of "reconcile" with it or something... but the magic had long drained from my life by then. I was older now, an adult doing adult things, and the ocean was not _the Ocean_, it was only... the ocean.

It would be a few years before someone would remind me that this place is _alive_ and there is _magic_ here.

Knowing what I know now, I'd like to go visit it again soon... :)

This place made me wonder about other places and the way they came to be as well. Can you imagine that the surface of our planet once was lava fields and all sort of strange processes happened there all the time. We live on the cooled of layer and somehow it is now a living, breathing ecosystem. Or perhaps, we just think so. The reality could also be _aliens_.

Yea, it was pretty steep way down xD about 12 meters. Drop like a rock. I am scared of heights, but somehow peeking over these edges didn't seem so scary. It could be because of the soft looking grass illusion lol

Knowing what you know, it seems like it is long overdue to go and see the ocean with THOSE eyes, because it is definitely some kind of magic there :)

You absolutely should one day! It's marvelous! Yea, I am experimenting a bit. It seemed black and white brought out the texture of rocks more in those particular shot if it makes sense.

All of your photos are very beautiful! Great capture!

This place is really wonderful with nice name, "the Giant’s Causeway". I haven't ever seen this before. Most of the rocks are giant sizes and have amazing shapes and I also wonder why there are plenty of them at this place....

The science theory are interesting. In the meantime, I very much enjoyed reading the giant story as well. Really exciting! Well said...., "folklore and stories stem from things people back in the old days couldn’t explain or understand how it could have happened, or formed", I totally agree.

The Atlantic Ocean view is very magnificent! I also love the deep blue of the water, very marvelous. The wild flowers are very gorgeous.

You were very lucky to see these things with your own eyes. Thanks so much for sharing. ;)

Aww! Thank you! :)

First time I learned about the Giant's Causeway was in school when we had to make a presentation about an interesting place in the world. That is when I decided that one day if I get the chance, I want to see it. I am so glad I finally did. The rocks are really impressive and the variety of different shapes and forms. Fascinating stuff!

I think those stories just make our world so much more colorful and for us to use our imaginations. Even though as adults we oftentimes laugh about how silly some of them are, it is still quite fun.

I don't know what it is about huge bodies of water, I just love sitting by them. I can stare at the horizon for hours and not get bored. It is like my mind suddenly expands and everything seems much more clear.

Indeed. I am glad you saw my post, hope you enjoyed :)

You're welcome!

Oh! It's great that you finally got the chance to go to the place that you were interested since you were in school. You were so lucky. Not many people can follow the dream, like you! This is very fascinating place indeed.

I absolutely agree with you, those stories are quite fun for us to use our imaginations, no matter we are children or adults and they make our world much more colorful, as you said!

Well described and great wordings! I think, I feel the same as you.... I love to sit by the ocean and stare at the horizon for hours and not get bored, too.

Yeah! I enjoyed your post very much! Many thanks once again for sharing. ;)

Wow. Cool rocks! I grew up around columnar basalt so have always had an attraction towards it. My favorite? Devil's Postpile, Wyoming.

I've also seen the Atlantic, but my 'native' ocean is the Pacific.

This is a truly beautiful post.

Hi, @m31. How are you?
Wao the photos are beautiful, my favorites are the ones in color, one of the things I like about travel, (besides enjoying the beautiful landscapes), is listening to the stories that each place has, those stories that exercise us imagination. Thank you for sharing one of the stories of Ireland. :)
### Happy Day.

Congrats on this very informative post and on your gorgeous pictures! The Giant's Causeway is iconic but you've managed to show us a different perspective with your shots. We had never heard of the legend behind these rocks though but it definitely must have played out just as you've described it. ^^

Those rocks are definitely awesome and all the different shapes! I was stunned.

It is funny though how our instincts are to capture all the beauty of the places and leave out certain things such as the floating rivers of people. I shall try and make a post one day from the travel somewhere, showing only the "ugly", all the things I would leave outside the photo frame you know? Would be interesting to see what it would look like hehe

I am glad you loved to see these rocks and read the stories from there :) Thank you for stopping by!

Wonderful place. Much more interesting is the hexagonal shape. I think there should have strong scientific theory or reason behind these shapes.

It is, it really is wonderful! Most of them are actually polygonal, but strange how those formed. I am sure there is also stronger scientific explanation for the shapes basalt makes somewhere, but it is something to do with cooling process :)
