Hello friend of the farm today I am going to talk about a subject that is currently under discussion as it is called electric fishing where when and how it should be done. This fishing is a method of catching fish in which electric current is used. For decades, electricity was used to fish fish in our rivers in a furtive way, but that time has luckily happened and electricity is still used to fish for trout, but in a regulated manner and not for death and commercialization. WHAT IS ELECTRICAL FISHING USED FOR?
This method is used especially in the case of sampling of small fish, and in shallow habitat, being very effective under those requirements, allowing quantification by electric pulses, being useful in investigations where fish communities are correlated with the environmental characteristics of their environment.
This system has wide advantages in studies of sampling of multi-specific populations, assemblages, communities, taxocenosis, etc. It allows to capture secretive or difficult-to-locate species, which are usually not detected when conventional capture methods are used.
The affected specimens are driven by the electrode operator to the mesh, after which they are usually anesthetized. This allows its identification to field, weighing, taking measurements, etc. All the information obtained is put on payroll. Finally, if it is not necessary to collect specimens for museums or for other studies, individuals are returned to the same water course where they were collected, the percentage of mortality being low, if used correctly. If it is used at the right time, on the appropriate aquatic course, and using the techniques already established, it is the most efficient sampling method of all known, besides being relatively economical.

WHERE EQUIPMENT AND METHODS ARE USED ACCORDING TO HABITAT
For rivers and small streams, about 4 meters wide and 25 cm deep, it is possible to use shore equipment and walk along its banks thanks to the length of the wiring. Even better is the use of backpack equipment, which allows total autonomy, carrying on your back a person the electric generator while another person will carry the battery.
In this type of rivers it is possible to close them by means of networks, which allows, after mapping the surface and depth of the section, not only to know the species that inhabit the fluvial course but also the number of each species, its total biomass, its measurements , ages, etc., in addition to obtaining the percentages per square meter or cubic meter of those waters, and then extrapolate or compare the results with other sections of the river.
In broader and deeper rivers it becomes essential to use several equipment. In larger rivers, the teams must be placed on boats and the fishermen who will wade through the surface must connect to them. If the depth is enough to prevent wading safely, then you must fish from the boats themselves. Likewise, it is very difficult to obtain reliable results in medium or large fluvial courses, low conductivity and fast currents, which present very complex problems for this technique.
The anode is placed on the end of a pole covered by electro-insulating material. It is possible to select between different types of anodes: in the form of a ring, copper wire frame, electro sphere, umbrella type (both for fishing on board), etc.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO WE USE?
The device for electric fishing is structured under 3 premises:
A generator set, which generates the electric current.
A transformer or rectifier of the current, according to what is required.
The electrodes

Each of these parts can be assembled to the rest, or failing that, be joined by plugs and cables
To perform this type of technique we have portable backpack equipment of electric batteries, non-polluting and CE European homologation, with manual voltage regulation that allows us to control the power of pulsed current, less invasive, so as not to kill the animals:
In ranges of 12.5 V
Number of pulses per second
Duration of each pulse.
We use fish transport tanks created specifically for this purpose. They have rounded edges to prevent damage to the fish in the custody and transport.

TYPES OF ELECTRICAL CURRENTS USED FOR FISHING
Direct current, also called direct current is a flow of electric charges that does not change direction with time. The electric current through a material is established between two points of different potential. When there is continuous current, the terminals of higher and lower potential do not interchange with each other. It is the most used because it minimizes the damage to the fish.
Alternating current is the electric current in which the magnitude and direction vary cyclically. The waveform of the most commonly used alternating current is that of a sinusoidal wave. It is used less than the previous one because the degree of stunning is greater, as is the percentage of mortality.
Both currents can be modified to produce new variations of currents, which in electric fishing facilitates the capture of different species and sizes of specimens.
In front of an alternating current, the fish respond by positioning themselves perpendicular to said current, with the objective of minimizing their body voltaic gradient. The fish are immobilized and present electrotétano at the same time that they swim of forced form and without direction (oscilotaxis). On the other hand, if we form a continuous current field, the fish respond by forced swimming but with direction (galvanotaxia) suffer a type of paralysis caused by muscle relaxation (called electronarcosis), while being attracted to the end of the anode or boiler, in which the negative pole is located.

RISKS
The greater the amperage and voltage the equipment possesses, the greater its danger, but if the methodology is used, the risk is very low. Also, until mastering the technique, it is convenient to start with other more trained specialists, and always using new boots or gloves or in excellent condition; In addition, spare sets should be available in case of cracks.
The cables and equipment must be tested before transporting them to the river, to be sure they do not have any damage or ruptures. If you want to avoid "calambrazos" (electric shocks) you have to follow some principles:
• Do not enter the water while the engine is running.
• Do not take the fish from the pitches or nets with bare hands, without gloves.
• Do not pick up the anode with your bare hands.
• Do not put your hands in the water in a radius less than 2 meters from where you fish.
• A person must stay close to the engine, to be able to turn it off in case of accidents.
• With the same facility in which electricity is transmitted in the waters of a stream, as it does in the wet layer of a generator set that was exposed to rain, so in case of unfavorable forecast it must be transported to the area to work plastic covers to be able to keep it always dry.
