What is so infuriating  (as a US citizen) is that there is no guidance to what to do about it or what will be done about it so that there is some kind of protection. Are the other credit agencies saying anything? Are they still sharing data? When we get individually hacked, they are so willing to "*protect*" us from any further attacks. At a cost, of course. But now, how can they say they are protecting us? What's worst. Equifax KNEW of the breach six weeks **BEFORE** they announced that it happened.  Senior executives made sure to sell their stock first!!! Where is the advice? Where is even an apology and a promise to work on a recovery?

Now that we are at risk, what can we do about it?

It's a good question. The trouble is that the copies of the personal data are already out there. Short of systematically seeking out each copy and having it deleted it's more a case of taking a 'from now on' kind of approach.
